DIED

In this city, on the 25th inst., of rheumatism of the diaphragm, Mr. Thomas THOMSON, formerly of England, aged 23 years.

In this city, on the 25th inst., of chronic diarrhea, Mr. Edw. HOZEN, formerly of Wisconsin, aged 40 years.

At Mississippi or Fisher’s Bar, on the American river, May 31, John McCOY, of Lowell, Mass.

The friends of the deceased may address Alden SOUTHWORTH, Beal’s Bar.

“Whom the Gods love die young.”

On Saturday, June 22d, 1850, at Sutter’s Fort, Miss Martha McCLELLAND, in the 14th year of her age.

The death of a young person is always a melancholy theme. The deceased was just entering upon the bloom of womanhood, and such were her virtues that she was beloved by all who knew her. Amiability, gentleness and affection shone resplendent in her character, which blended with a modesty so pure and lovely, rendered her admired by a large circle of acquaintances.

Death has taken a favorite daughter and sister, and caused a void which cannot be filled. The sweet flower, just budding and spreading its fragrance around, has been snapped by the ruthless invader; but the consolation remains, that she has exchanged this world for a happier home - eternal in the Heavens. The service at her funeral on Sunday morning was very solemn, while the sanctity of the day served to render it still more so.

Her last moments were calm and serene. Perfectly resigned, she exclaimed, that she did not wish to live. “Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like hers.”

DIED

OBITUARY - Died in this city on the 21 inst., of cholera, in the 42d year of his age, HARVEY D. SMITH, formerly of Hartland, Niagara Co., New York. Mr. S. was beloved and respected by all who knew him - his was a rare instance of that charity and kindness of heart towards his fellow man - pure morality and patience and perseverance under necessity, that but few who are in the hardening pursuits of a competency retain. And whether in his various occupations in his native State, Mississippi or Louisiana - whither he went in quest of it, or in California in mining or mercantile pursuits, he has stood the test and come out as pure as gold as is probably the lot of mortals to attain. But the days of his pilgrimage are over: his example and precept can no more influence his fellow man; but his memory will never depart from those who knew and appreciated his character. New York papers copy.

At Carricita, near Warner’s Ranch, Aug. 29th, Don DAMASO LOPEZ, a native of Spain, but for many years a resident of New Mexico. He leaves four children at school in St. Louis, Mo.

At Santa Barbara, on the 27th Aug., DON JOSE A. MENENDEZ.

At San Gabriel, July 18th, MARIA REID, aged 27, wife of Felipe Reid.

On board steamship Independence, Aug. 30th, of congestion of the bowels, H. DONNOVAN, of Charleston, S.C.

Coroner’s Inquest on Durie - Man Drowned

                                         San Francisco, Feb 15 - 1 ½ P.M.

At the Coroner’s inquest last night, on DURIE, the daughter, Elizabeth FAUZER, corroborated what has already been stated, and pretty clearly establishes her father’s guilt.

Mr.(sic) Fauzer was called, but her testimony was objected to, as it would criminate her husband.

The inquest was then adjourned to Wednesday evening. The funeral of Durie takes place to-day, at 2 o’clock, from the engine house No. 5.

It is certain that one man was lost from the steamer Uncle Sam; but his name is not given.

The steamer Northerner arrived this morning with three days’ later dates, but no news.
