Biographies
GEORGE H. PENWELL, M. D.
Though
a resident of the Sacramento valley but a short time, Dr. George H. Penwell is
well established in the practice of medicine and surgery at Woodland and has
gained recognition for his ability and skill in the treatment of human
ailments. The Doctor was born in
Princeton, Missouri, on the 19th of June, 1897, and received his
elementary education in the public schools of Larned, Kansas. He pursued his regular college course in the
University of Kansas, at Lawrence, and then matriculated in the medical school
of the University of Kansas. He was
graduated from that institution with the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1924,
after which he took a post-graduate course in surgery in the Yale School of
Medicine. He served a fifteen months’
internship in the Kansas City General Hospital, at Kansas City, Missouri, and
then entered upon the practice of his profession at Marquette, McPherson
County, Kansas. In the winter of 1929-30
Dr. Penwell came to California for a three months’ stay, but so well pleased
was he with the country, climate and people that he decided to remain
here. For a few months he was at the
Weimar Sanitarium, at Colfax, California, and then, in April came to Woodland
and opened an office. He has been very
successful, enjoys a large practice and commands the confidence of the people
to a marked degree.
Dr.
Penwell was united in marriage to Miss Esther Lillian Young, who was born in
Alexandria, Kansas. She became a member
of Delta Gamma at Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas, is a member of the Order of
the Eastern Star and is very popular socially.
The Doctor is affiliated with Marquette Lodge, No. 353, F. & A. M.,
at Marquette, Kansas; the Phi Beta Pi, medical, and Alpha Tau Omega
fraternities, and belongs to the medical societies of Yolo, Colusa, and Glenn
counties; the Kansas State Medical Society, the California Medical Society and
the American Medical Association. Since
coming to Woodland he has gained a wide acquaintance and his cordiality and
sincerity have made him greatly respected throughout the community in which he
lives.
