HISTORY
For a number of years it has been the firm conviction of many members of the Church of Christ in this city and elsewhere that the success of our work and the Metropolis demanded that there should be a congregation of disciples organized and at work somewhere in the Western Addition.
In accordance with this long cherished belief, on the first day of May, 1892, thirteen persons met in Longhead' s Hall on Polk Street, and consecrated themselves to God for the purpose of establishing a Christian Church in this part of this city.
For twelve months they continue to meet regularly in the above place. They had no pastor but several times during the year were visited by ministers who preached one or more sermons for them. When there was no preacher present they had social meetings, continuing "steadfastly in the Apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread and prayers." On July 9th they completed the organization of a church by the election of bishops and deacons.
In the Spring of 1893, through a liberal donation made by Mrs. N. S. Douglass, the church was enabled to purchase the property now occupied by it. W. A. Gardner was engaged as pastor and began his labors May 7th, 1893. At the time there were twenty-five names on the Church role.
On the following Lordsday a Sunday School was organized with thirteen members, a few weeks later a Y.P.S.C.E. with nine members, and later on a Junior C. E. and a Christian Women's Board of Missions Auxiliary. A Ladies Aid Society had been formed during the previous year.
From May 7th, 1893, to January 1, 1895, 274 persons were received into the Church, about 150 of whom came in during a meeting held by S. M. Martin in the Fall of 1894. The Church has lost 17 by death and dismissal leaving the present membership nearly 300.
