JAMES RICHARD TURMAN born 1800 Georgia, migrated into what is now Lamar Co. Alabama in 1820 along with his brother Milton Anderson Turman. James married approx. 1832 to Elizabeth Longmire born 1812 Ala. James died before 1860 and was buried in the Pine Springs Cemetery near Sulligent, Ala. He and Elizabeth were the parents of seven children all born in Sulligent, Ala.

1. GEORGE RICHARD born 15 May 1834 died 7 Oct 1905. George served in the Civil War and was wounded. He was married in 1865 to Mary Armstrong born 10 April 1839 Sulligent, Ala. The daughter of Mary Armstrong born 10 Apr 1839 Sulligent, Ala. The daughter of William and Sarah M. Armstrong of North Carolina. Wm. being born there in 1810 and Sarah 1815. 2. LEE ROY born 18 Jan 1837 died 24 Aug 1886. Lee Roy md Martha Jordan Bickerstaff. No children from this union.

Due to the fact that the Loggins and the Turmans intermarried several times I will give genealogical data concerning some of the families.

SAMUEL LOGGINS born 7 Nov 1825 South Carolina. Samuel and his wife possibly came into Marion Co with their parents as very young children. Samuel died 18 Mar 1902. Elizabeth (surname not known) was born 28 May 1825 SC and died 20 Aug 1905. Both are buried in the Pine Springs Cemetery near Sulligent, Ala. They were the parents of six children all born in Sulligent, Ala.

1. DEMP LOGGINS born 16 Nov 1884 died Dec of 1972 md 30 Sep 1909 Pine Springs Rural Church to Edna Earl Ray born 29 Sep 1885 Detroit, Ala. Died 15 April 1967. The family attended the Methodist Church. Demp was a Farmer by trade. His wife, Edna was a School Teacher. Mr. Loggins was a fine man. I had the pleasure of meeting him and talking with him in 1972. He could recall many of the early day events that took place around Sulligent. Many of them best left untold! If I again visit Sulligent, I will miss seeing him sitting in his porch swing. He passed away in the Vernon Hospital from heart failure. He is buried in the Pope Cemetery. Demp and Edna were the parents of four children all born in Sulligent, Ala.:

1. Robbie Ray born 18 Aug 1913 md Huston H. Fowler 24 June 1937 in Aberdeen, MS. No children from this union. Robbie died 3 June 1972 in Aberdeen, MS. Robbie was a Reg. Nurse and was employed by the Gilmore Sanitarium in Amory, MS.

GEORGE RICHARD TURMAN born 15 May 1834 Sulligent, Alabama the son of James Richard Turman and Elizabeth Longmire. Married approx 1866 to Mary Helen Armstrong born 10 Apr 1839 South Carolina, the daughter of William Armstrong and Sarah Armstrong. George Richard died 7 Oct 1905 Sulligent and is buried in the Pine Springs Cemetery near Sulligent, Ala. George served in the Civil War and was wounded in battle. Mary died 22 Nov 1919 and is also buried in the Pine Springs Cemetery.

Mary Helen was on of nine children born to William and Sarah Armstrong. Her father was an Herb doctor. Other children were: Warren born 1836 who became a Doctor; Henry C. born 1841; Sarah Ann born 26 Aug 1845; Bernard born 1847 md Hilda Duncan; Julia born 1850; Millard F. born 1854 md Bobbie Jones; and an unnamed infant daughter one month old in 1860.

George and Mary Turman were the parent os eight children:

NOTE: Mary Armstrong had a brother who was a Doctor, Dr. Warren Armstrong. She also had a sister Sally who married Scott.

NOTE: Lee Cemetery, which joins Marvin Noes farm, has only one Turman grave with no marker. The cemetery is in a pasture and the cattle broke most of the markers before the farmer put a fence. The cemetery is now covered with brush and vines.

Mr. Norton was md 3 May 1914 Sulligent, Ala to Mary Etta Turman born 16 Sep 1895 Sulligent, Ala. The daughter of George Jay Turman and Martha Ann Carden. Mary Etta died in the Vernon Hospital 20 Jun 1974 and was also buried in the Pine Springs Cemetery.

Etta was a very lovely lady with a very sweet personality. After her husband’s death, she resided in the home place north of Sulligent on the Star Route North. She attended the Methodist Church where she was an active member. Etta had many friends. Etta had the gift of making beautiful quilts and quilted for others up till the time of her illness.

Thomas Norton was the son of Charles Berry Norton and Beadie Abigail Taylor. Thomas and Etta were the parents of eight children:

LEE ROY TURMAN born 7 Jun 1897 Sulliagent, Alabama died Apr 1979 at the Vernon Hospital buried in the Pine Springs Cemetery. Roy md 7 Dec 1919 to Lillian Gladice Crump born 29 Jan 1900 died Apr 1982, the daughter of John Howard Crump and Lula Green Lewis. Mr. & Mrs. Turman resided for many years on a farm north of Sulligent on Star Route North, where Mrs. Turman still resides. Roy was a Farmer by trade. He and Lillian were active members of the Methodist Church.

Mr. Turman had been ill for some time before his death and had had several strokes. He was a very pleasant person, and very enjoyable to be around. He always had a joke or funny story to tell. He was a large tall man. He enjoyed taking walks and talking about his family and ancestors. He and Lillian made several trips to Oklahoma and Arkansas to visit relatives before his death. Many parts of this manuscript were furnished by Mr. & Mrs. Turman. Without their help it would have been impossible to finish. Lillian loves to quilt and make pretty things. Lillian loves to garden and can her own vegetables. Roy loved to grow peanuts and had a very rare variety of black ones. Roy always had a couple of old hounds, which usually barked all night. To know them was to love them. They always made you feel at home.

Before his death, Mr. Turman and Lillian divided their land between their children. Several of them now have beautiful homes built near the home place. Roy is gone now, but his Turman tradition will live on through his children, and the Turman land will have many more generations to carry on the family traditions. Lillian at the age of 80 in June, still has her gardens and provides a handy babysitter at times. She is like a precious Pearl to her children and grandchildren.

Roy and Lillian were the parents of seven children, in which six is living, all born Sulligent, Ala.:

1. CHLOE born 28 Sep 1920 md 28 Aug 1953 to Pois O. Scott born 1908. Chloe is a Beautician by trade and has a shop in Sulligent. She and Pois have recently built a beautiful brick home on the land given to her by her parents. Chloe is a very lovely person. They have one son:
