ERNEST ALBERT STENT
Ernest
A. Stent, one of the most capable and experienced mining men in the Sacramento
Valley, for many years has been connected with the Argonaut Mine Company, of
which he is now the vice president and managing director. He was born in Ottawa, Canada, on the 3rd
of September, 1861, and is a son of Thomas and Sarah (Scannel) Stent. His father was the official architect for the
provincial government of Canada, in which capacity he designed many of the
government buildings. He moved to New
Jersey, where he resided until 1894, when he came to California, and he and his
wife died in this state. They were the
parents of eight children, three of whom are living.
Ernest
A. Stent was educated in the public schools of New Jersey, in which state he
lived until twenty-one years of age, when he came to California. For some time he was interested in mining in
Colorado, Utah, and Nevada, and after coming to California located in Tuolumne
County, where he was identified with such mines as the Juniper, Golden Rule and
Santa Isabel. He became well and
favorably known in that locality and the present town of Stent was named after
him. He also was interested in various
mining projects in old Mexico and during the past quarter of a century has been
connected with some of the larger mining properties in Amador County. Since 1909 he has been a director of the
Argonaut Mine Company, and has been made vice president and managing director
of that corporation, which is one of the leading gold mines of this locality.
Mr.
Stent was united in marriage to Miss Frances Harris, a native of California,
and they are the parents of four children, Frances, Ernest, Kathryn and
Ferdinand. Mr. Stent is a Republican in
his political affiliation and takes a deep interest in public affairs. He belongs to the Union and Bohemian Clubs of
San Francisco. Though he is a great
reader and is interested in a wide variety of subjects, gold mining is his
hobby and in this field of effort he is recognized as an expert. He has been successful in his individual
affairs and is one of the leading citizens of his community, where he is held
in high regard.
