ERNEST ALBERT STENT

Ernest A. Stent, one of the most capable and experienced mining men in the Sacramento Valley, for many years has been connected with the Argonaut Mine Company, of which he is now the vice president and managing director.  He was born in Ottawa, Canada, on the 3rd of September, 1861, and is a son of Thomas and Sarah (Scannel) Stent.  His father was the official architect for the provincial government of Canada, in which capacity he designed many of the government buildings.  He moved to New Jersey, where he resided until 1894, when he came to California, and he and his wife died in this state.  They were the parents of eight children, three of whom are living.

Ernest A. Stent was educated in the public schools of New Jersey, in which state he lived until twenty-one years of age, when he came to California.  For some time he was interested in mining in Colorado, Utah, and Nevada, and after coming to California located in Tuolumne County, where he was identified with such mines as the Juniper, Golden Rule and Santa Isabel.  He became well and favorably known in that locality and the present town of Stent was named after him.  He also was interested in various mining projects in old Mexico and during the past quarter of a century has been connected with some of the larger mining properties in Amador County.  Since 1909 he has been a director of the Argonaut Mine Company, and has been made vice president and managing director of that corporation, which is one of the leading gold mines of this locality.

Mr. Stent was united in marriage to Miss Frances Harris, a native of California, and they are the parents of four children, Frances, Ernest, Kathryn and Ferdinand.  Mr. Stent is a Republican in his political affiliation and takes a deep interest in public affairs.  He belongs to the Union and Bohemian Clubs of San Francisco.  Though he is a great reader and is interested in a wide variety of subjects, gold mining is his hobby and in this field of effort he is recognized as an expert.  He has been successful in his individual affairs and is one of the leading citizens of his community, where he is held in high regard.
