JUDGE
JOHN L. MORAN
In 1930, when Judge John L. Moran, was elected to the
state senate for the district comprising Tehama, Glenn and Colusa counties by a
good majority, a Corning newspaper stated that he “was a man whose continued
connection with political office has not made him susceptible to the accusation
of being a professional politician.”
This is a terse description of Judge Moran, whose record as a citizen of
Tehama county, as a soldier in the World War, and as a
public servant has been unassailable.
His duties as justice of the peace were consistently discharged with
intelligent and liberal judgment, and his position in the community is of the
highest order.
John L. Moran was born in Tehama county,
California, July 28, 1897, a son of John and Belle (Webb) Moran. John Moran, who was a native of Ireland, came
to California and first settled at Dixon, where he worked on the construction
of the Southern Pacific Railroad, then engaged in farming, and is still
residing in Tehama county. He and his wife were the parents of three
children, namely: Rhoda, who is the wife
of B. E. Gaddis; Hugh J., of Tehama county; and John L., of this review.
John L. Moran attended the grade and high schools of
Corning, and for a year studied at the Chico Business College. He then engaged in ranching from 1915 until
1921, after which he sold automobiles for one year. He next entered the insurance business,
handling all lines of insurance risks.
He was elected justice of the peace at Corning on the Republican ticket
in 1926, and now retains this office with great credit to himself, and, as
noted before, is also now state senator of California. During the World War, Judge Moran was a
member of the Sixteenth Division, and was stationed at Camp Kearney, San Diego,
California, until his discharge, February 21, 1919. He has been secretary of the Corning Rotary
Club for the past two years.
In 1922 Judge Moran was married to Miss Elizabeth
Cockcroft, a daughter of John and Isadora (Dexter) Cockcroft, who came to
Tehama county from the state of Rhode Island.
John Cockcroft, now deceased, was a woolen manufacturer.
