FRANK H. GRAVES

FRANK H. GRAVES.  The executive ability which has distinguished the efforts of Frank H. Graves as manager of the large estate left by his father has numbered him among the successful men of Sutter county, of which he is a native son, having been born on the ranch which he now occupies.  His father, Henry S. Graves, was a native of Middletown, conn., where he was born in 1830, at the age of ten years accompanying his parents to Iowa, where they became pioneers of the middle west.  He lost his father during his boyhood, but remained with his mother until 1849, in which year he crossed the plains with ox-teams to California and engaged in running a packtrain to the mines.  During the winters he came down to the ranch now owned by his family, seven miles north of West Butte, Sutter county, where he kept his stock, in 1852 settling permanently on the property by taking up a squatter’s claim.  He at once proceeded to improve the ranch, building a stone fence, etc., and at the same time ran his packtrain for a few years, in addition to which he was also interested in carrying provisions from Sacramento to the mines by river.  Later he engaged in the stock business and added land from time to time as his means increased, until at his death, which occurred in 1888, at the age of fifty-eight years, he owned four thousand acres, of which a large portion was devoted to farming and the remainder to the raising of stock.  This large property fell to his family, consisting of his widow, three sons (Frank H., George M. and Albert W.) and three daughters (Louisa J. Doyle, Julia A. Royce and Annie H. Farnsworth).  In 1903 the property was incorporated, Frank H. residing on the home place and managing its affairs, while the other sons have built residences, barns, outbuildings etc., on the ranch, also.  The ranch is devoted largely to the raising of stock, special attention being given to the raising of sheep, having a band of from three to four thousand at a time.  During his accumulation of this magnificent property Henry S. Graves won for himself the esteem and confidence of all who came in business contact with him, his public spirit and liberality winning him a prominent place among the citizens of Sutter county.  He was a strong temperance man and a member of the Good Templars, in which he has always been a worker, spending considerable time in travel to advance the cause of the organization.  He was also identified with the Pioneers Society of Marysville.

The marriage of Mr. Graves untied him with Mrs. Mary (Terstegge) Darple, a native of Germany, who came to the United States in childhood and from Indiana crossed the plains to California in 1852.  She is now seventy-three years of age and is making her home with her daughter in Santa Cruz.  She is the mother of the following children:  Louisa J., the wife of James Doyle, of Berkeley, Cal.; Frank H., the subject of this review; George M., who rents a part of the home ranch; Julia A., the wife of Fred Royce of Santa Cruz; Albert W., who rents a part of the home ranch; and Annie H., the wife of Ralph Farnsworth of San Jose, Cal.

Frank H. Graves was reared to young manhood on his father’s property, and upon the death of his father he naturally took up the responsibilities of the management of the ranch.  The family continued to farm the property together, with Frank H. as manager, until 1903, when they incorporated and he continued in his position.  He is very popular and meets with success in his work, being numbered among the representative men of the community.  He married Lillie Zumwalt, a native of Missouri, who came to Colusa county, Cal., in childhood.  They are the parents of four children, namely:  Jessie, Cletus, Frank H., Jr., and Helen.  Mr. Graves is a Republican in his political affiliations and has always been active in the counsels of his party, now serving his second term as supervisor of the first district, which comprises the north end of the county.  He met with no opposition in 1904, the year of his re-election, and was elected chairman of the board.  Mrs. Graves is a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Death:             Jun. 3, 1888

Henry Graves came to California in 1849 at the age of 19. For work, he drove pack teams to the gold mines. He acquired a squatter's title to land on the northwest edge of the Buttes and began building there in 1852. He married a young widow, Mary Terstegge Darple in 1862. They raised six children there. By 1888 the family had accumulated 4,000 acres and began raising wheat, barley, and sheep. Affiliation with a social/service organization was a measure of one's standing in the community, therefore, Graves was a member of the Pioneer Society, North Butte Grange, and the Good Templars.
