THOMAS DEAN, JR.

THOMAS DEAN, Jr.  Located in the vicinity of Noysburg[sic], Sutter county, Thomas Dean, Jr., is engaged in the raising of turkeys, which business has brought him ample profits in the past few years.  A native of Jefferson county, Ohio, he was born August 24, 1857, a son of Capt. Thomas Dean.  The latter was a native of Virginia, but was reared in Ohio, where in manhood, he engaged in steam-boating on the Mississippi river with an uncle.  In 1849 the attractions of the Pacific coast led him to come to California, the trip being made by water in company with this uncle.  Upon his arrival he settled at Marysville, Yuba county, where he followed various occupation[sic], and among other lines of endeavor owned a livery stable.  Later he located on a ranch in Sutter county, where he has since made his home, now being seventy-three years of age.  He became one of the prominent men of the county and section, in the Butte County Rangers serving as captain of a company.  He is a man of broad general information, having given a great deal of attention to reading.  His wife, formerly Hannah Hyndman, a native of Ohio, who came to California in 1858, is still living at an advanced age.

Until attaining his majority Thomas Dean, Jr., remained on the home ranch, after which he began working on the various ranches throughout the section.  After four years he rented his father’s ranch, upon which he engaged in general farming for three years.  He then purchased his present property, which consists of forty acres in the vicinity of Noysburg[sic], and here he has since followed general ranching and the raising of turkeys, of the latter producing from five hundred to a thousand per year.  He has met with success in this line, and has become one of the prominent ranchers of Sutter county, improving his property and adding to its general value.

Mr. Dean was united in marriage with Kate Conger, who was born in Wisconsin and reared in Missouri.  They are the parents of two children, Hazel and Ray.  In his political affiliations Mr. Dean is a stanch[sic] adherent of the principles advocated in the platform of the Republican party.
