MISS FRANCES M. BURKET
Miss
Frances M. Burket, librarian of the Sutter County Free Library at Yuba City, is
a woman of fine administrative ability and has discharged the duties of her
responsible position in a manner that has gained for her a high reputation
among patrons of the library. She was
born in Crete, Saline County, Nebraska, and is a daughter of Calvin Miller and
Lila (Code) Burket. Both parents are
deceased, the mother passing away four years ago and the father two years
ago. They came to this state long since
and settle in Riverside County, where they remained until 1920.
Frances
M. Burket studied music, both piano and voice, and taught piano. She graduated from the high school at
Riverside, later went to Butte County, and in 1918 became an appointee in the
Butte County Free Library at Oroville.
She took a course in library work at the California State Library and
successfully passed the county library examination. She served for four years as librarian of the
Amador County Free Library and in 1925, came to Yuba City as librarian of the
Sutter County Free Library. She has
three assistant librarians and also has supervision of the libraries in
twenty-eight elementary schools, four high schools, and thirteen branch
libraries in various parts of Sutter County.
There are also four high school libraries, the Sutter Union, the Live
Oak Union, the East Nicolaus, and the Yuba City Union high school
libraries. The main library and office
is located in Mission Hall, a county-owned building in Yuba City. This library contains over twenty-eight
thousand volumes, exclusive of the school department, and about fifty-five
thousand volumes altogether, including the elementary and general collection of
school books, music records, maps and atlases, besides current magazines for
the school and branch library, as well as church and religious papers and the
county newspaper. The circulation of
books for the school year 1929 was ninety-three thousand volumes, and the total
library membership in main library and branches, not including the schools,
about five thousand. Miss Burket has
given her best efforts to perfecting the library system in Sutter County and
has been distinctively successful, so that her services have been very highly
commended by all who are familiar with her work and accomplishments. She is progressive in her ideas and methods
and is very highly regarded throughout the community.
