EDWARD
F. TREADWELL
Edward
F. Treadwell, attorney, was born in Woodland, California, on May 19, 1875. The son of William Brewster and Adelaide Augusta (Kirk) Treadwell.
His legal education was received at
the Hastings Law College, from which he graduated in 1897 with the degree of
LL.B.; admitted to the California bar on May 16, 1897, Nevada bar in 1908,
Oregon bar in 1910, and has also been admitted to practice before the District
Courts of California, Nevada, and Oregon, United States Circuit Court of
Appeals and to the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Treadwell began his legal career
in San Francisco, California, in 1897, associated with the firm of Mastick, Van Fleet & Mastick,
with whom he remained until 1907. From 1907 to August 15, 1922, he was general
counsel for Miller and Lux, Inc.; active in political
and civic affairs from 1906 to 1925. In 1925 he formed a partnership with the
firm of Treadwell, Van Fleet & Laughlin, which is now the firm of Treadwell
and Laughlin.
Mr. Treadwell is connected with the
principal water litigation of California, Oregon and Nevada. He was formerly
attorney for the Southern California Edison Company in litigations involving
water rights, for the East Bay Municipal Utility District in litigation
regarding validity of its organization and bond issue, and for West Sacramento
Levee District regarding Sutter Basin assessment. He won the inheritance tax
cases for the estate of Henry Miller, involving more than ten million dollars.
Member of the Phi
Delta Phi fraternity; Masonic bodies; Commonwealth, Press, Bohemian, and San
Francisco Commercial clubs.
Mr. Treadwell is the author of
“Annotated Constitution of California” (six editions); and “The Cattle King,”
1931.
On March 31, 1900, he married Eulila Maty Ayres. On March 17,
1944, he married (3d) Doris Skinner Birney.
