Biographies
HERMAN PHLEGER
Herman Phleger, lawyer, was born in Sacramento, California, on
September 5, 1890; the son of Charles W. and Mary (McCrary).
He obtained his preparatory
education in the pubic schools of Sacramento, California, and the University of
California, graduating from the latter in 1912 with the B.S. degree. He
obtained his legal education at University of California and Harvard Law
School; admitted to the California bar in 1914, and to practice before the
Supreme Court of the United States in 1917. He was instructor in bankruptcy and
quasi-contracts at the School of Jurisprudence, University of California,
1916-17. Received the LL.D. degree from Mills College in 1935.
Mr. Phleger
began practice of the law in San Francisco, California, in association with the
firm of Morrison, Dunne & Brobeck and later
became a partner in the firm of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison in 1925. Mr. Phleger
is president of the Board of Trustees of the Children’s Hospital, San
Francisco; trustee of Stanford University; director of the
American Trust Company, Union Oil Company, The Paraffine
Companies, Inc., Fibreboard Products, Inc., Moore Dry
Dock Company, Matson Navigation Company; trustee of William G. Irwin Charity
foundation, San Francisco.
During World War I, he served as
lieutenant in the United States Navy, 1917-18, and in World War II, served as
associate director of the legal division of the Office of Military Government
for Germany, 1945.
Member of the Bar Association of San
Francisco, The State Bar of California, American Bar Association; Pacific-Union
Club, Bohemian Club (San Francisco); Burlingame Country Club.
On April 2, 1921, he married Mary
Elena Macondray; children: Mary Elena, Atherton Macondray, and Anne. Their home is in Woodside, Redwood
City, California.
