literature. Married. One son. Attained international fame when his poem, “The
Man with the Hoe” was published in 1898. Has been a resident of New York for
over twenty-five years. Is constantly writing and has published several books
of poems. Mr. Markham is today (1927) recognized as the Dean of American
poetry. He visited San Jose in 1927 and was given by the literary residents of
this city, as well as San Francisco and Oakland, the honor due a man who has so
eminently distinguished himself.

Mrs. Pillot was for nearly fifty years one of the
ablest and best loved teachers in the San Jose School Department. She died in 1926,
after a brief illness. This is a tribute paid her by one of the graduates of

After her husband's death Mrs. Pascoe went to Hawaii and taught in a mission
school several years. She returned to San Francisco and lived there until her
death in 1923.
