Was County Superintendent of El Dorado County seven years. Has spent much time in literary work. Has written poems and sketches for prominent magazines, and delivered lectures upon subjects connected with English and American literature. Married. One son. Attained international fame when his poem, “The Man with the Hoe” was published in 1898. Has been a resident of New York for over twenty-five years. Is constantly writing and has published several books of poems. Mr. Markham is today (1927) recognized as the Dean of American poetry. He visited San Jose in 1927 and was given by the literary residents of this city, as well as San Francisco and Oakland, the honor due a man who has so eminently distinguished himself.

For eleven years she has been connected with the San Jose Evening Schools where her proficiency in modern languages and her background of experience among the peoples of Europe have made her an invaluable instructor. Her persistent work among the foreign mothers has made her a loved visitor among our alien population, and her influence in adult education has been a marked piece of work in the San Jose school department. Went to the Hawaiian Islands in December, 1888, on account of her husband's health, and taught there a short time. Returned in 1889, after the death of her husband.

Katie F. O'Hara (deceased), Santa Clara County, Calif. Taught in San Jose.

Mary A. Packham (Mrs. G. F. Pillot), Santa Clara County, Calif. Taught in San Mateo County; the remainder of the time since graduation taught in San Jose High School. Married July 3, 1876. One child. Mrs. Pillot was for nearly fifty years one of the ablest and best loved teachers in the San Jose School Department. She died in 1926, after a brief illness. This is a tribute paid her by one of the graduates of this school gifted in expression:

Tell me before I flicker into the darkness,

Is there somewhere a torch that I have kindled?

 

Helen N. Penniman (Mrs. Geo. C. Pardee), Alameda County, Calif. Latest address, East Oakland, 672 11th Street. Taught ten years in the Grove Street School, Oakland. George C. Pardee was governor of California from 1903 to 1907.

Sheldon Raney, San Joaquin County, Calif. Taught in Fresno, Santa Cruz, and Contra Costa Counties. Left teaching in 1884, on account of failing health and engaged in mercantile business. Was Postmaster and Justice of the Peace.

Ella Said (Mrs. W. E. Houghton), Santa Clara County, Calif. Taught in Solano, Mono, and Kern Counties. Married December, 1880. Husband died in 1895. At this date (1927) has taught thirty-seven years.

Mrs. Frances C. Sawyer (Mrs. August Blohm), Santa Clara County, Calif. Address, Pacific Grove. Taught in High School, San Jose, then in Pacific Grove High School until her marriage. Is now a widow.

Ella E. Whelan (Mrs. Greenman), Alameda County, Calif. Taught in the Oakland public schools.

Oliver P. Workman, (deceased), Sonoma County, Calif.

Alice M. White (Mrs. David), Merced County, Calif. Latest address, Sturgeon, Merced County. Taught in Merced County and Sacramento County. Married May 19, 1877, and moved to Michigan. Returned to California in 1888. Since that time has taught in Merced County.

Taught in Humboldt, Plumas, and San Mateo Counties; was assistant in Normal School five months; and after taught in Hester School, San Jose. Married July 20, 1880. After her husband's death Mrs. Pascoe went to Hawaii and taught in a mission school several years. She returned to San Francisco and lived there until her death in 1923.
