DOCTOR
ROBERT E. BURNS
Robert
E. Burns, president of College of the Pacific, was born in Flat River,
Missouri, on July 26, 1909. He is the son of John L. and Stella Lee (DeGrant) Burns.
He graduated from College of the
Pacific in 1931 with the degree of A.B. (A.M. degree, 1946). Received the LL.D.
degree from Willamette University in 1947.
Dr. Burns was field secretary for
College of Pacific, Stockton, California, from 1931 to 1932, alumni and
placement secretary from 1932 to 1936, College of the Pacific Registrar from
1936 to 1941, registrar and assistant to the president from 1942 to 1946, and
has been president since 1946. He was a member of State of California
Centennials Commission, and presently is a member of State of California Park
Commission.
Member of California Historical
Society; Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Gamma Mu, Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Epsilon Omicron,
Phi Mu Alpha and Rho Lambda Phi; San Joaquin Masonic Lodge No. 19, Scottish
Rite, Ben Ali Shrine; Rotary Club, Commonwealth Club of California; Stockton
Y.M.C.A.; belongs to the Methodist Church and is a member of the University
Senate and the National Board of Education of the Methodist Church; president
of the California Conference of Social Work.
Dr. Burns married Grace Weeks on October
6, 1934. Their home is the President’s Residence, College of the Pacific,
Stockton, California. They have two children: Bonnie Jean and Ronald Robert.
