THE UPTON MORTUARY
One of the most modern mortuaries in
northern California is that owned and conducted by Mr. and Mrs. A. Dustin Upton
at Weed. Mrs. Upton is a licensed
mortician in the states of California, Oregon and Washington, and conducts all
of the professional duties of the business, while her husband has the
management of the funerals and other affairs.
The equipment of the Upton Mortuary is of the most modern type,
including a large Studebaker hearse, and in Siskiyou county
the services accorded by this representative undertaking establishment has been
most acceptable and appreciated.
Mr. Upton was born in the state of
Nebraska, February 6, 1882, while his wife, whose maiden name was Muriel C. La Cunnae was born in
Pennsylvania. They were married November
23, 1925, in Yreka, California. Mrs.
Upton came to California in 1925, having previously gone to Oregon in 1910 as a
professional nurse. She later took up
mortuary work with E. B. Hughes, with whom she worked for twelve years, and
after four years apprenticeship she became a licensed operator herself. Mrs. Upton occupies an
unique position, women morticians being rare in the profession, but she has
manifested an extraordinary ability and understanding of her work, and likewise
has gained the regard of the people of her city and county by her winning
personality and desire to cooperate in all worthy affairs. She is the mother of one child by a former
marriage, namely: Fielding O. Russ, who
is an estimator with the Field Art Tile Company of Portland, Oregon. She is a republican in her political
affiliation, while Mr. Upton is an adherent to the democratic
party.
In 1930, Mrs. Upton was appointed as
deputy coroner of Siskiyou county by Coroner Felix
Kunz of Yreka.
