E. C. SMITH
E. C. Smith, who is very capably filling the responsible
position of manager of the T. Jones & Company store at Hornbrook, has had consiberable
business experience and stands high in public esteem. He was born in Etna,
Siskiyou county, in September, 1900, and is a son of
M. F. and Anna E. (Salstrom) Smith, both of
whom are natives of California, the father having been born in Siskiyou county
in 1872, and the mother in Humboldt county. They are the parents of seven
children, Vivian, E. C., Lawrence, Frances, Merle, Ray and Harrold, all born in this state. M. F. Smith did some
mining in early days, and also was active in the transportation business,
packing by mule teams. He is now engaged in the garage business at Etna.
E. C. Smith attended the public schools, graduating from
the Etna high school in 1919, after which he engaged in farming in Scott
valley. After three and a half years he turned his attention to clerical work,
being employed in a general store at the Forks of the Salmon river
for some time. His next position was in the office of the wholesale grocery
firm of J. R. Garret & Company, which later sent him to its head
office at Marysville. He spent four years there, part of the time in the office
and part as a traveling salesman. When that firm sold out to
the Western Wholesale Grocery Company, in January, 1929. He [sic]
continued with the latter until he was proffered his present position, which he
accepted and in which he has done very capable and satisfactory work. He has
charge of a fifty thousand dollar stock of general merchandise and his previous
experience in mercantile affairs has been invaluable to him here.
In 1925 Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Miss Catherine
Marlahan, of Scott valley, who is a graduate of both
the high school and Teachers College and taught four years in Scott valley and
San Jose, this state. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are the parents of two children,
Edward Michael and Robert M. Mr. Smith shows an effective interest in
local public affairs and is an exemplar of the best type of citizenship, being
a man of high ideals and practices.
