NICHOLAS MUGLER

One of Mount Shasta’s leading industries is the ice plant owned and operated by Nicholas Mugler, who is building up a large and steadily increasing trade through this section of Siskiyou county. He was born in Salina, Kansas, on the 16th of December, 1878, and is a son of Peter and Mary (Wildermuth) Mugler, the latter born in Geneseo, Illinois. The father was born in Hamburg, Germany, and after coming to this country located in Salina, Kansas, where he engaged in the brewery business. He was the first brewer to be put out of business by the United States government. Kansas being the first state to go dry, the case of the United States versus Peter Mugler was the first case tried. Having thus lost his property, Mr. Mugler, in 1885, came to California and bought a brewery at Red Bluff, which he operated for three years, when the plant was destroyed by fire. In 1888 he came to Sisson, now Mount Shasta, and operated a brewery for a time. He also established and ran a bottling works for a while. His death occurred in 1917. To him and his wife were born nine children, eight of whom are living.

Nicholas Mugler received his early education in the grade schools and took a commercial course in the Sacramento Business College. He was engaged in the bottling business in Kansas City, Missouri, and in Denver, Colorado, after which he traveled considerably in that line of business. Later he bought his father’s bottling works at Mount Shasta, which he conducted for a while, and then transformed it into an ice plant, with a capacity of three hundred tons daily. This plant is modern in every respect, and is one of the most important enterprises of this locality.

Mr. Mugler was united in marriage to Miss Edith Chambers, of Falls City, Oregon, and they are the parents of three children, as follows: Marjorie, a teacher in the schools of Tracy, California, and the wife of Cecil Conner, a radio electrical engineer; Gladys, the wife of Carl Salts, a saw filer; and Mary, who is a student in the University of California, at Berkeley. Mr. Mugler is a member of the Masonic order and he and his wife are members of the Order of the Eastern Star. They take a live interest in everything concerning the welfare and progress of their community and are very highly esteemed by their fellow citizens.
