WILEY MOORE
The
history of Wiley Moore, the well known merchant at Angel Valley, near Weed,
Siskiyou County, is a record of persistent and consecutive effort from young
manhood, and of steady progress, often in the face of difficulties, until today
he has achieved a noteworthy success and is one of the community’s
representative men. Mr. Moore was born
in Missouri, on the 14th of November, 1892, and is a son of William
Wiley and Sarah Belle (Maples) Moore.
His father, who was a sawmill man, and owned two mills in Missouri, took
his family to Oregon in 1902, with the intention of entering business
there. However, he was taken sick and
died within a month of his arrival, leaving his widow and five children: Ella, who resides in Eureka, California;
Celia, the wife of Howard Warner, who runs an oil distributing station in
Grenada, this state; Wiley; Leland, who is a teacher in the grammar schools at
Monterey, this state; and Lucretia Isabelle, who is at Stockton,
California. One child, William, died in
infancy.
Wiley
Moore attended public schools of Missouri, spent three years in the grammar
school at Grants Pass, Oregon, one year in school at Sisson, now Mount Shasta,
and one year at Weed. After going to
Grants Pass, he entered the employ of the Weed Lumber Company, now the
Long-Bell Lumber Company, with whom he was connected for fifteen years, during
which period he was promoted to the position of sub-foreman. For about a year he was with the Red River
Lumber Company at Westwood and then went to Dorris, where he was in the employ
of the Block-Winger Lumber Company. On
leaving that concern he came to Weed and for one year was employed in the sash
and door factory of the Weed Lumber Company.
He then established a meat market, which he conducted for a short period
and in 1916 opened his present store in Angel Valley, near Weed. Here he carries a large stock of groceries,
meats and general merchandise, valued at between five and ten thousand dollars,
and also handles gas and oil. He is in a
good district and, by his fair dealing, accommodation and courtesy, has built
up a substantial and prosperous business.
In this he has been ably assisted by his wife, who has been a real
helpmate in the truest sense of the term.
In
1923 Mr. Moore was united in marriage to Miss Clementine Agnes Stimson, a
daughter of Charles A. and Mary Louise (Zilliak)
Stimson, the former head saw filer for the Weed Lumber Company, and mentioned
elsewhere in this work. Mr. and Mrs. Moore
are the parents of a son, Robert Wiley, Jr.
Mr. Moore is a member of White Pine Lodge, No. 555, F. & A. M. at
Weed; Royal Arch Chapter and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks at
Ashland, Oregon. In his religious faith
he is a Protestant. By a consistent
life, characterized by honesty and fairness in all of his personal relations,
as well as by his industry and fine public spirit, he has won and retains the
respect of his fellowmen.
