M. H. McCARTHY
As
the publisher of the Western Sentinel at Etna, one of the most interesting
newspapers among the smaller cities of northern California, M. H. McCarthy has
been uncommonly successful. He is known
as a capable newspaper man, and conducts a clean sheet in every respect. The Western Sentinel is a recognized
advertising medium for an extensive territory.
This publication has recently been leased to another party.
Mr.
McCarthy was born in Siskiyou County, April 7, 1869, a son of M. H. and Hanora (Danihy) McCarthy. The father was born in Ireland, and came to
the United States in 1859. He settled in
the state of Massachusetts for a brief time, and then came to Scott Valley,
California. In 1860, he began mining and
in this occupation and in farming, he continued during the remainder of his
life, which terminated on January 18, 1918.
Daniel McCarthy, an uncle of M. H. McCarthy, came to California in 1854
and made some good gold strikes, but later lost his money in further
ventures. Six children were born to M.
H. and Hanora McCarthy, namely: Daniel, a miner, who died in 1921; John, who
died in youth; Eugene, who also died young; M. H. of this review; Mary, who
married Charles E. Humphreys, a miner, and lives in Scott Valley; and Francis
P., who is engaged in business at Fort Jones, Scott Valley.
M.
H. McCarthy studied in the common schools of his home county, and his early
education has been supplemented through the years by his extensive reading and
by observation. He has always remained a
student, and has never ceased acquiring an education. His first activity in newspaper work was at
Scot Bar, then at Fort Jones, following which he was at Santa Cruz, California,
for sixteen years, then Monterey, California, for ten years, followed by a stay
at Oakland and at Santa Clara. In 1906,
Mr. McCarthy returned to Siskiyou County, and for ten years was a ranger, after
which he established his newspaper at Etna, having a circulation of between six
and seven hundred. He also conducted the
Standard at Fort Jones for three years, or until 1916. He is a Democrat in his political faith, and
is a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West.
Mr.
McCarthy was married in 1893 to Miss Serena Thompson, who was born in Kansas,
and came to California in 1889.
