Biographies
JAMES A. KORMAS
Among
the successful young business men of Weed, Siskiyou County, is numbered James
A. Kormas, one of the proprietors of the California Pool Hall Café, a leading
restaurant of this locality. He was born
in Greece, on the 13th of October, 1896, a son of Thomas and Sophia
(Dedonses) Kormas, the latter still living in that country. The father, who followed
farming during his active life, died in 1925.
James
A. Kormas received his educational training in the grammar and high schools of
Greece, after which he was for a year employed in the post-office. In 1911 he came to the United States and
settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he made his home for three years, during
which period he worked in mills and factories.
In 1914 he went to North Dakota, where he was employed on the St. Paul
Short Line of the Northern Pacific Railroad, with which he was connected for
nine months. He then came to Weed and
found employment in the factory department of the Weed Lumber Company, with
whom he remained one and a half years.
Going then to Klamath Falls, Oregon, he was employed in a sawmill for four years.
His health having become impaired, Mr. Kormas came to Weed and rested a
short time. On his recovery he returned
to Oregon and resumed the position which he formerly held in the
sawmill. At the end of two years,
however, he contracted typhoid fever, which laid him up for a year and a half,
and on his recovery he came to Weed and for four or five years was employed in
a restaurant. In 1929 he became a partner
of James G. Davis in the ownership of the California Café, which they have made
a very successful enterprise. The place
is kept clean and is very carefully conducted, special attention being given to
the comfort of their guests.
In
1922 Mr. Kormas was united in marriage to Miss Melissa Kell, who was born in
Red Bluff, California, and her father having been one of the leading farmers of
Tehama County. He is also a bricklayer. By a former marriage Mrs. Kormas is the
mother of a son, William Worth, who is at home.
Mr. Kormas is a member of the Loyal Order of Moose at Weed and of
Annoses Lodge, a Greek organization. He
is a member of the Orthodox Greek Church and gives of his means to all worthy
benevolent causes. Hunting is his
favorite sport. He is closely devoted to
his business, in which he has won success, and is regarded as one of Weed’s
progressive and enterprising men.
