DR. D. L. HIMES
One of the leading professional men of Siskiyou county is Dr. D. L. Himes, who is a chiropractor of Weed, where he as gained an extensive practice. He was born in Greenwood county, Kansas, February 19, 1882, a son of the late C. M. and Genettie (Cooper) Himes, the former a native of Ohio and the latter of Iowa. C. M. Himes was for a quarter century a minister in the United Brethren Church, then changed his affiliation to the Christian Church. He followed his calling all over the state of Kansas, and in 1896 came to Oregon and Washington. His death occurred in the year 1907, at Chehalis, Washington. The Himes family, probably originally spelled Heims, was of German descent.
Dr. Himes received a common school education in Greenwood county, Kansas, and at Oskaloosa, with high school work at Brownsville, Oregon. In 1904 he attended the normal school at Monmouth, Oregon, after which he took up clerical work for the Northern Pacific Railroad for two years. For the purpose of regaining his health, he went to Santa Cruz, California, where he spent three months, then went to Houston, near Modesto, California, where he was employed by a milk company as a tester, having a knowledge of chemistry and also having had some experience in the dairy business. During the World war, he worked at Bethlehem Steel Yard, operating a riveting machine. Following this service for his country, he went to the San Joaquin valley in the dairy business, during which time he suffered an unfortunate accident. He was thrown from a horse and the animal fell upon him, causing injuries which developed paralysis. He went to Oakland seeking relief, but six months saw no improvement. Finally he called for the services of a chiropractor, and after seven treatments he was able to move his feet and limbs. He gradually improved and finally recovered his physical health completely. This experience caused him to decide to take up the chiropractic profession himself, and he accordingly began the study of the science, graduating in December, 1923. He began practice at Fresno, California, where he remained one year, and was then in Kermin, a small village, nearby, for a short interval, after which he came north to Yreka, Dunsmuir, Weed, and Mt. Shasta city, practicing at first in all of these towns. He later gave up such a wide field, and worked at Dunsmuir until 1925, when in March he moved to Mt. Shasta and there he remained three years. In 1929 he purchased his present home at the southern entrance to Weed. His office is at his residence, which is attractively situated on a hillside facing the snow-capped Mt. Shasta. Eventually Dr. Himes intends to construct a hospital for the use of his patients. He practices at Weed in the forenoon, and at Dunsmuir in the afternoon. His patronage is large in both places.
Dr. Himes was married, February 19, 1929, to Miss Elizabeth Barry, of Boston Massachusetts, who is a graduate nurse and has had wide hospital experience. She is a competent assistant to her husband in the conduct of his practice. She came to California in 1922, and at Los Angeles had charge of the Kiddy Coop Nursery for two years. She then engaged in private nursing for three years. Dr. Himes has one child by a former marriage, Alice Ethel, who married H. J. Deetze, a stationary steam engineer of Modesto, California.
Dr. Himes is a democrat in politics, buts votes independently in state and county elections. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias at Weed, also belongs to the Al Tani Asher Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Redding, California; The Loyal Order of Moose at Weed; and the Neighbors of Woodcraft at Dunsmuir. They are member of the Christian Church.
