L. HERZOG
Among
the members of Siskiyou’s pioneer families who are
still prominent in the business circles of the county is A. L. Herzog, manager
of the Franco-American Hotel at Yreka, and also the owner of a fine ranch about
one mile from the town. He was born in
Yreka, in July, 1873, and is a son of Charles and Mary Ann (Phiffner)
Herzog, a record of whom appears in the sketch of Charles R. Herzog, on other
pages, of this work.
Mr.
Herzog received his educational training in the public schools of Yreka, since
which time has been engaged in ranching on his fine five hundred acre farm, a
part of the old home place. Here he
raises large quantities of hay and grain, and breeds and raises hogs and Shropshire sheep.
The livestock he kills and sells at retail to the local trade in Yreka
and surrounding country, which gives him a better profit than selling it on the
hoof. He has made many improvements on
the home place, having remodeled the house and ornamented the grounds with
shade trees, shrubbery and flowers, making it a very pleasant and attractive
home. Mr. Herzog is also successfully
conducting the Franco-American Hotel in Yreka, going into town each day from
his farm. The hotel, which contains
about fifty rooms, is well located on Miner Street, the principal thoroughfare
of the town. It is neatly and
attractively furnished, and has in connection a dining room, lunch counter and
other characteristics of an up-to-date hotel.
It is also headquarters for the stages running north and south from
Yreka, for which tickets are sold. In
the main lobby may be purchased soft drinks and cigars, and the place is headquarters
for many of the old timers of the community.
In
1904 Mr. Herzog was united in marriage to Miss Emma Lincoln, a daughter of John
and Matilda (Stagg) Lincoln. Her father
came across the plains in an early day, and was a miner on McAdams creek, near
Deadwood, where he spent most of his active life. In later years he retired and moved to Etna,
Siskiyou County, where his death occurred in 1920. Mrs. And Mrs. Herzog are the parents of three
children, namely: Alden, who died young;
Robert, who died at the age of seventeen years; and Aldean,
who is the wife of Eric Johnson, a telephone man, living at Weed, this county. Mr.
Herzog is a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks at Ashland,
Oregon, and the Improved Order of Red Men and Fraternal Order of Eagles at
Yreka. He has worthily upheld the
prestige of the family name in this county, has fully
measured up to the demands of citizenship and is numbered among the
representative men of his community.
