STEVE GEORGES

Among the natives of Greece who have, through their persistent industry and good management, attained success in this country are a number in the Sacramento valley.  Of these, attention is here called to Steve Georges, owner of the Pastime Pool Hall and Café, in Weed.  He was born in Greece, on the 15th of March, 1888, and is a son of Socrates and Mary (Georges) Georges, who, though of the same family name, were not related.  The father, who was a farmer, is now deceased, and is survived by his widow, who still resides in Greece.

Steve Georges was reared at home and attended the public schools.  In 1907, when nineteen years of age, he came to the United States and located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where for about three months he worked for the Schlitz Brewing Company.  Later in that year he came direct to Siskiyou County, California, where lived a brother, who was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad.  Mr. Georges entered the employ of the same company, and held that position for three years.  His next position was in a box factory operated by the Weed Lumber Company, with which corporation he was connected for five years.  He then started a grocery store and meat market, which he conducted for about five years, when he sold out and for about a year again worked in the box factory.  He then started a pool hall and restaurant, which he ran until 1925, when he came to his present location and engaged in the same line of business under the name of the Pastime Pool Hall and Café.  Here he has enjoyed a good patronage, due to his painstaking attention to the wants of his customers and his genial and friendly manner, and he enjoys a good business.

Mr. Georges is a member of Manchester Lodge, F. O. E., at Mount Shasta, and is well liked among his associates and acquaintances.  He has made application for American citizenship papers.  Hunting and baseball are his favorite sports and he takes an interest in everything pertaining to the welfare and progress of his community.
