JAMES G. DAVIS
James
G. Davis, a popular citizen of Weed, Siskiyou County, is one of the owners of
the California pool hall, soft drink parlor and restaurant, one of the leading
establishments of its kind in this section of the valley. He has gained success through hard work and
good management and is worthy of the high place which he holds in the
community. Born in Greece on the 26th
of October, 1891, he is a son of George and Constandina
(Kormas) Davis, both of whom are still living in Greece. The father is a farmer and also serves as tax
collector.
James
G. Davis received his education in his native land and came to the United
States in 1906, at the age of fifteen years.
He entered the employ of the Algoma Lumber Company, with which he was
connected for thirteen years. Later he
was with the Fruit Growers Supply Company, at Hilt, California, for five years,
and in 1927 came to Weed and established his present restaurant business. He has fine equipment, maintains the place at
the highest standard of excellence and by careful attention to the needs and
desires of his patrons has built up a very satisfactory business. His partner is his cousin, James Kormas.
In
1918 Mr. Davis enlisted in the United States Army at Klamath Falls, Oregon, and
went into training at Fort MacArthur.
From there he was sent to Camp Upton and thence overseas, where he saw
fourteen months of active service. He
was promoted to corporal and was honorably discharged from the service August
25, 1919, on Long Island, New York. Mr.
Davis is one of seventeen hundred young Greeks to whom a gracious compliment
was paid in an invitation to them to pay a visit to their native land at the
expense of the government of Greece.
These seventeen hundred Greeks took out citizenship papers in this
country on the advice of their home government, and served their adopted
country during the late war, and now, together with one hundred American
Ex-officers, they are spending six months in their old home land (1930). Mr. Davis was particularly glad of the
opportunity of visiting his mother, who is now very aged. The plans were that on their arrival near
their native land they would be met by the Greek Navy and saluted. Their entire expense while in Greece is to be
borne by that government.
In Yreka, California, Mr. Davis was
united in marriage to Miss Anna Nunes, whose death
occurred on December 20, 1929. On
October 5, 1930, he married Mary Ecomomou, a well
educated and cultured young lady of Greece, daughter of George and Stravroula Ecomomou, her father
being in the confectionery business. In
his political affiliation Mr. Davis is a Democrat, while fraternally he is a
member of the Knights of Pythias at Hornbrook, California, and the Dramatic Order of Knights of
Khorassan at Redding.
Mr. Davis is fond of outdoor sports, particularly of baseball and
hunting. Throughout the community in
which he lives he is popular, owing to his good qualities, his business ability
and his friendly manner.
