ISAAC S. DAVIS
Isaac S. Davis, who has spent most of his life in the Little Shasta valley, is one of its successful ranchers and stock raiser, and a public spirited citizen. He was born near Montague, Siskiyou county, on the 17th of April, 1872, a son of Henry L. and Henrietta (Deter) Davis, the former born in Tiffin, Ohio and the latter in De Kalb county, Indiana. The father came overland to California and during his active life followed ranching and the stock business. He also did some carpentering and mining in the early days. In later life he became one of the founders and principal owners of the Montague Bank. He made two trips across the plains and on his second trip made up a train of wagons, and was accompanied west by E. L. Coonrod, the father-in-law of Isaac Davis. Isaac S. Davis received his education in the district school and was reared to ranch life, to which he has devoted his attention continuously since. In 1897 he left the old home and purchased a farm in Butte valley. On November 24, 1897, he married Margaret Aldee Coonrod. In the fall of 1899 he purchased a farm near Merrill, Oregon, where he resided until his father’s death in 1915, when he returned to Shasta valley, and purchased the share of the other heirs, and since then has been owner of the old home in which he was born. He has used excellent judgment in his business affairs, has devoted his efforts tirelessly to his special line of work and has received a commensurate reward in the way of material returns. He is now owner of two thousand acres of land, five hundred acres being devoted to the raising of hay and grain, while the remainder is utilized for pasturage for his herd. He runs an average of four hundred head of cattle a year, practically all of which are Shorthorns, which he sells on the hoof, feeding the stock on his farm products. This land was wild and unimproved when bought by his father and its present condition, together with the splendid farm buildings, reflect creditably on his judgment and taste.
Mr. and Mrs. Davis have four children, as follows: Henrietta, who is the wife of Henry Terwilliger, son of Frank and Susan Terwilliger, pioneers of the Little Shasta valley, Orlo, who is married and with his wife lives on the family farm, Anna, the wife of George Brabham, who lives near Corvallis, Oregon; and Henry, who is attending high school in Yreka. Mr. Davis gives his support to the republican party and has served as a member of the school board, being greatly interested in educational matters. He is a member of the Grange at Little Shasta. Though a busy man, he occasionally finds time to indulge at his favorite sport, hunting. His long residence in this locality has given him a wide acquaintance and throughout the community he is held in very high regard for his sterling qualities and his ability as a business man.
