CHARLES CASEDY
Charles
Casedy, who is very capably filling the office of brand inspector for Siskiyou
County, is one of the locality’s well known and greatly respected
citizens. He was born in Siskiyou County,
September 10, 1857, and is a son of Daniel and Mary (Haight) Casedy. His father was born at McConnelsville, Ohio,
and in 1853 came across the plains, driving an ox team to Oregon. In that state he ran a pack train for several
years, and then came to California and engaged in the stock business, though
his trade was that of a tinsmith. To him
and his wife were born eight children, as follows: George, who was a mail clerk and died in
Portland, Oregon; Charles; Harry, who is a physician in Chicago, Illinois;
Frank, who died in boyhood; Addie, who is the widow of a Mr. Kinross, who was a
musician; Fulton, who died in Little Shasta, California; Mrs. Mabel Henderson,
whose husband is a native of New York, and is a musician; and Minnie, who died
at the age of three and a half years.
Charles
Casedy received his education in the public schools
at Little Shasta valley, and then engaged in ranching. Later he managed the Huesman ranch of some
five thousand acres for five years. He
was the manager of the county hospital for two years, after which he rested for
two years. He again became the manager
of the Huesman ranch, which position he held for four years, after which for
two years he was manager of a stock ranch, on which there were thirteen hundred
cattle. He then went to Portland,
Oregon, where he was with a meat company for two years, and also was identified
with the Portland stock shows for two years.
He next became connected with the Louie Brothers, shipping for the Union
Meat Company, but soon afterward began shipping cattle for himself, conducting
that business for eight years. He then
took over a hotel in Gazelle, which he managed for three years, after which he
went onto the Leland Stanford Foulke ranch as a renter and for five years
devoted his efforts to raising hay and grain and to feeding cattle. He then returned to the hotel at Gazelle, of
which he was manager for two years, relinquishing that position to accept the
appointment of brand inspector for all towns of Siskiyou County. He is well qualified for this position and is
discharging his duties in a very satisfactory manner.
In
1913 Mr. Casedy was united in marriage to Miss Anna Woodrum, who died February
14, 1930, at Redding, California, and is buried there. In his political views Mr. Casedy is a
Republican, though he supported Al Smith in 1928. In his younger days he was an expert hunter,
being a fine shot, and has hunted over most sections of this part of the state. He is well known and is exceedingly popular
and well liked by all who know him.
