JAMES BARRY
James
Barry, one of Shasta county’s foremost ranchers and stock raisers whose
splendid ranch is located near Cottonwood, was born in Tehama County,
California, on the 16th of August, 1860, and is a son of John and
Hannah (Brennan) Barry, both of whom were born in County Cork, Ireland. The father came to the United States in 1858,
landing at New York City, whence he proceeded across the country to San
Francisco. He engaged in mining at Horsetown, near Shasta, where he remained until 1862, when
he took up a homestead claim and thereafter devoted his attention to raising
sheep up to the time of his death, which occurred at Cottonwood, Shasta county, in 1888. His
wife passed away many years previously.
To them were born seven children, as follows: John H., a cattleman, who died in Arizona;
James, of this review; Nellie, who died in Tehama County in 1860; Addie, who
lives with her brother James in Cottonwood, where she also is engaged in the
livestock business and who recently made a trip abroad, traveling by airplane
from New York to California; Robert, who was engaged in the stock business as a
partner of his brother James, and died about 1917; May who is retired and lives
in San Francisco; and Frank, a stockman, who died in 1913.
James
Barry is the owner of fourteen thousand acres of land in western Shasta County,
on which he is running three thousand head of cattle, largely of the Durham
breed. He is engaged in breeding, feeding
and selling to the market on foot, using his hay and grain for fattening
purposes. He is careful and painstaking,
is a good manager, attentive to details, and has met with a splendid measure of
success.
Mr. Barry lives with his sister
Addie in Cottonwood, where they occupy a nice stucco bungalow. Mr. Barry is a member of the Benevolent
Protective Order of Elks at Chico, and his religious connection is with the
Roman Catholic Church. He enjoys a wide
acquaintance throughout this section of the valley and is greatly respected for
his business ability and sterling personal qualities.
