On the 8th day of July, 1846, war existing between United States and Mexico, San Francisco was formally taken possession of by Captain John B. Montgomery, commanding the U.S. Sloop-of-War "Portsmouth," who appointed Lieut. Washington A. Bartlett, Alcalde, or Chief Magistrate. The roll of Alcalde after the American occupation, with their periods, is as follows:
