Famous First

San Francisco made its musical debut in 1852 at the concert of Elisa Biscaccianti. First great singer to venture into the rugged frontier city, this petite, dark-eyed girl with the beautiful coloratura voice was received enthusiastically by her audience and affectionately renamed the “American Thrush.” And starting from that first performance over a century ago, San Francisco has become a cultural center, attracting the musical greats of the world to its concert halls and opera house.

In 1870, eighteen years after the “American Thrush” first sang here, Crocker First National Bank was founded – the first and oldest national bank in California.
