PRESIDENT'S REPORT.
To the Board of Directors and Members of Infant Shelter:
It is with mingled feelings that I send
greetings to you, my fellow workers; greetings from the land of snow, where personal
pleasures and duties detain me, to the land of sunshine where personal
pleasures and duties call me. It is a very duel of inclination; so far decided
in favor of the snow. But because so long denied, perhaps, the call of the
sunshine is becoming very insistent! There is a feeling, that may be quite well
called determination, that sunshine is so much better than snow that it is a
good thing to avoid the snow altogether. I am so hoping.
My report this year can be only an
imperfect recital of the great things accomplished by Shelter members and a
grateful acknowledgment of faithful and efficient work by our corps of helpers
who have made the work itself a matter of pride to us all.
It was my wish that our vice-president,
Mrs. G. H. Umbsen, make the Annual Reprot (having done the work of the year). She has replied
to my request by a counter one—that
I make it, and, as you can imagine, I am in no position to refuse any request
from her. My obligation to her is a very deep one and I hereby acknowledge it.
The financial question is always with us;
this year it became crucial as our balance was below the four thousand mark at
one time. As we have no endowment; no regular source of income except money
paid for children's board and membership dues (five dollars a year), we cannot
let our balance become lower than that without a great effort to fill the
treasury.
Since the work of the Society Circus and
Horse Show was all done without my aid or presence, I feel that I can praise it
as it deserves, without stint.
This great good fortune came to us because
three of our members, present at a dinner party, had our Shelter in their
minds. When Mr. W. H. Humphrey, president of the Olympic Club, spoke of a
circus to be given by that club, our three members, Mrs. Adrian Splivalo, Mrs. G. H. Umbsen, and
Mrs. H. P. Umbsen, had an idea that made them an infinity of trouble and hard work. "Why
not the circus for the benefit of our Shelter?"
You know the result and it is not my
purpose to review it in detail. Theses ladies formed the executive committee.
The larger committees whose hard work made so much of the detail work go so smoothly will be found on another page of the
report. What I am interested in here is the fact that the executive committee
seized the opportunity because the work meant something very important to them.
For that and their subsequent untiring, devotion in organizing and carrying
through the project they have received the warm appreciation of every member of
our organization.
Two legacies have been paid into our
treasury this year. Each one was the result of the thought of some member who
remembered our work at the right moment and spoke to the right person
concerning the fact that we need to be remembered in wills. Mr. Van Duzer told me that it was the Misses Schroth
who interested his wife to leave us the legacy. Who influenced Mrs. Brown, I do
not know, but I think it was a visit to the Shelter itself. Some good member
must have invited her. I should be glad to know who it is.
Beside the large sum of money made at the
circus and horse show, we have a long list of new members which will mean much
to our future. And many people became interested at that time who will become
members later, I am sure.
From my two months' visit in the middle of the year
I feel safe in saying that the care of the children has been kindly and
efficient. Many of you who visit the Shelter often will bear me out in this. It
can be seen in one visit; the clean, comfortable beds; separate department
(insuring personal care); hearty, happy children everywhere from the sunroom in
the tiny babies' department, to the screened porch of the creepers and on to
the roof garden, or to the big playroom of the older children.
But, I am sure you will understand me when
I say that this is not the most important thing in our work. You will remember
that in our last report I took some time to give personal histories of several
children who seemed so unattractive that we feared they were going to miss
getting the home that every child born deserves. And we have had testimony
during our past year that the child in each case has found happiness in the
home as well as giving it. It really is amusing in a way to find that each
foster parent is as fond and foolish as many real parents—each child is the best and
dearest ever—if not the
handsomest.
But this year we had a real trouble,
Billy! None of us thought the home would ever come to him; and sometimes we
felt it would not be just to the "home" either, as Billy just went
from one hard illness to another. Because so many are perfectly well; because
we have an isolation department; because we have plenty of good help (look at
the salary list for the care of fifty children); because our doctors are good
ones; because our relations with the Children's Pavilion at City and County
Hospital are cordial (and, by the way, it gives me great pleasure to testify
that they take very wonderful care of sick children in that Pavilion). Because
of all these things we were able to deal with Billy—though he was a trial unending.
Partly because Billy has had all the
things to be had in the way of sickness, there came a time when he was just
thin and pale and listless and unacceptable generally. Miss Vagedes
was taking her long rest in her mountain home. Miss Coffey and Miss Vagedes (who had borne the brunt of Billy) decided between
them that the mountains was the place for Billy. So of
course Billy was spirited to Miss Vagedes in Sutter.
The air was such a tonic that Billy was transformed in two months. To be
strictly accurate, he was so transformed that his mountain friend found that it
took a very great deal of time to keep him out of mischief; so much so that,
sad day for exuberant Billy, he was returned to the Shelter—a robust, rollicking boy.
In a very short time his home found him
and he is most appreciated, all due to the personal love and care and intense
interest of Miss Vagedes and Miss Coffey.
And this is what we mean in our city. We
save children for their mothers, and we save children from their
mothers. In the latter case we find homes at once for attractive children
and for those who are unfortunate in any way we have patience and try many
methods; we have not failed yet in placing any child, in time.
It was my pleasure to spend an
afternoon at the Shelter last October with Miss Helen Dare. She was extremely
interested, was not in a hurry, and asked questions. I knew she was getting a
very real idea of the work, but I must confess that I had no idea that any one could
get such a knowledge of it as she did in that two
hours.
She used the experience as a sociological
study in her column in the Chronicle, November 1st. I shall ask our
Secretary to incorporate it in our Annual Report, that all our members may have
a copy of it—a very
terse, clear statement, good to read often.
As your President, for too many years to
remember, I wish, in closing, to thank each and every member of the Shelter for
loyalty to our work this strenuous year. You will understand my feeling of
pride in this loyalty as it so perfectly fulfills my prophecy of so many years
standing, that though we appeal to the public very seldom for help, when we do
make an appeal, as in the Society Circus and Horse Show, our corps of workers
is unequalled in the world!! My exile makes this statement safe, I hope.
Respectfully
submitted,
MINNIE SABIN COOPER.
