DEAN WITTER

 

 

Dean Witter, partner in Dean Witter & Company, was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, on August 2, 1887; the son of Willis Guy and Elizabeth Louise (Gooding) Witter.

      His preparatory education was received at the University of California from which he graduated in 1909 with the degree of B.S.

      Mr. Witter was associated with Louis Sloss & Company from 1910 to 1914, then with Blyth Witter & Company from 1914 to 1924. He has been a partner in Dean Witter & Company since 1924. Mr. Witter has been consulting professor of finance at Stanford Graduate School since 1935; former director of several corporations; resigned all on entering the service in 1942.

      During World War I Mr. Witter served as Captain with the Infantry, 1917 to 1919, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and was cited for gallantry in action; awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action, Meuse-Argonne, 1918. In 1918 he was made assistant chief of staff, operations section, General Staff Headquarters, Chaumont, France. During World War II he rejoined the United States Army and served as Colonel with Ordnance Department, Washington, D.C.; civilian district chief of San Francisco Ordnance District since 1950. Awarded Ordnance Association Medal for outstanding service, 1945; also Commendation Ribbon.

      Member of the Pacific-Union Club, Bohemian Club (San Francisco); Links Club, Boone and Crockett Club (New York).

      Mr. Witter married Helen Josephine Perkins on February 20, 1918. Their home is at 2006 Washington Street, San Francisco, California.
