FATHER
AMBROSE TRABERT, O. F. M.
A representative member of the Roman Catholic clergy of San Francisco is Father Ambrose Trabert, who is the pastor of St. Anthony’s Church at 3215 Army street in this city, this parish church being in charge of the Franciscan Fathers. He was born in Los Angeles, California, February 10, 1889.
Father Trabert first attended St. Joseph’s parochial school in his native city, then the old mission in Santa Barbara, California, and the Novitiate in Oakland. He continued his studies in St. Anthony’s Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1915 was there ordained by Most Rev. Archbishop J. J. Glennon. He returned to Santa Barbara for one year, and then for a period of seven years served as a missionary among the Indians and Mexicans in New Mexico, Arizona, and the southeastern part of California. During this time his headquarters were in Phoenix, Arizona, and in Banning, California. He returned to St. Anthony’s Seminary in Santa Barbara as a teacher of languages for four years, and later was given his first charge at St. George’s Church in Seattle, Washington, where he remained for three years. Finally, in July, 1931, he came to St. Anthony’s Church in San Francisco as pastor. In this pastorate, he has seven assistant priests, this being the parent house, serving St. Paul’s of the Shipwreck and the Immaculate Conception churches. St. Anthony’s was founded in the ‘90s by the Franciscan Fathers. A parochial school is conducted at this parish, and services in the church are conducted in both English and German Languages.
