Biographies
CHARLES S. TILTON
CHARLES S. TILTON, engineer and surveyor, was born in Lowell,
Massachusetts, August 1, 1846. His parents,
Stephen S. and Mary P. Tilton, are natives of New
Hampshire. Mr. Tilton, his father, came to the coast
in 1850, and two years later went East and brought his
family, and they are well-known citizens. Our subject graduated at the high
school in this city in 1863. The following year he entered the office of the
County Surveyor, and was connected with the office for twenty-three years,
during the administration of the Democratic, Republican, People’s and
Workingmen’s parties, discharging the arduous duties of the position with
ability, fidelity and credit to himself and to the entire satisfaction of the
people. In 1884 he was elected County
Surveyor, and held that office two
years. Afterward he opened an office and has devoted himself to his profession,
giving special attention to city work. His long experience and ability has
brought him a successful business. Mr. Tilton is a member of the Masonic order,
and is a Knight Templar; also belongs to the I. O. O. F., and Knights of Honor.
He is now County Surveyor
and City Engineer for San Francisco
county, having been elected in 1890 for a term of two
years.
