H. J. Stewart
H. J. Stewart, who is
prominently identified with the musical circles of San Francisco, was born in
London, England, in 1854. He was reared and educated in his native
land. He entered Oxford University and graduated from that noted
institution of leaning, taking the university degree.
At an early age Mr. Stewart developed a talent for music, was given the best
opportunities and enjoyed excellent advantages in pursuing his musical studies,
with appointment of organist, until May, 1886, when he was induced to come to
San Francisco. Since that time he has been prominently connected with the
musical interests of this city and State. He teaches music in Van Ness
Seminary and other schools, and has a large class of advanced pupils; occupies
the position of organist at Trinity Church; has been conductor of Handel and
Haydn Society for several years; and is prominently identified with the various
musical entertainments of high standard in this city.
Professor Stewart is an ardent advocate of a great public conservatory of
music, thinks it a necessity and hopes to see it organized and established.
