CAUFFMAN SLOSS
Marcus Cauffman Sloss, attorney, was
born February 28, 1869, in New York City, New York. The son
of Louis and Sarah (Greenebaum) Sloss.
After his preliminary education in
the public schools of San Francisco he entered Harvard College, where he
received the degree of A.B. in 1890 and the degree of A.M. in 1893. He studied
law at Harvard Law School, receiving his LL.B. degree in 1893 and was admitted
to the California State Bar in the same year.
Mr. Sloss
was associated with the firm of Chickering, Thomas
& Gregory from 1893 to 1900, at which time he became Judge of Superior
Court of City and County of San Francisco. He continued in this office until
appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court on February 1, 1906. On
February 28, 1919, he resumed private law practice and is now senior member of
the firm of Sloss & Eliot, San Francisco,
California.
From 1934 to 1936 Mr. Sloss acted as arbitrator under the Award of National
Longshoremen’s Board, and is also active in the Community Chest and other
welfare activities.
He holds membership in the American
Bar Association, State Bar of California (past governor and vice president),
San Francisco Bar Association (past governor and vice president); Harvard Law
School Association; and the following clubs: Harvard of San Francisco (past
president), Concordia-Argonaut, Bohemian, Presidio, and Family.
Mr. Sloss
married Hattie Hecht in 1899 and they are the parents of three children:
Margaret Kuhns, born in 1900; Richard L., born in
1904; and Frank H., born in 1908.
