Biographies
JOHN NORGROVE
JOHN NORGROVE, the well-known manufacturer and dealer in
trunks, traveling bags and sample cases, at 12 Geary street, is a native of New
York, born in the city of Albany.
His parents came from England and
settled in New York. He was
reared and attended school during boyhood in his native State, living in Albany
and Syracuse,
and before reaching manhood went to Chicago.
After the breaking out of the war he returned to New York
and entered the service of his country. Enlisting in Battery H., First
New York Light Artillery, he served in the Army of the Potomac,
under General Grant. He had his full share of active service,
participating in thirteen battles. His horse was shot under
him twice in front of Petersburg,
June 18, 1864, during that terrific battle. While not seriously wounded,
his hearing was affected by concussion of the guns. After the war he
returned to New York and soon after to Chicago,
and was engaged in business there for some years. In 1868 he came to California,
and since then, for the past twenty-three years, has been a resident of this
city.
In
1877 he established his present business and engaged in manufacturing and
dealing in trunks, valises, and leather traveling bags, and since then, for the
past fourteen years, has successfully carried on the business in this central
location. His work is handmade, and every department of his business is
under his own personal supervision. He has established a high reputation
upon the superior merits of his work. Mr. Norgrove
is prominently identified with the Grand Army of the Republic, and is a member
of the George H. Thomas Post, No. 2.
