John Nightingale, M.D.
John Nightingale, M.D., whose office is at the corner of
Van Ness avenue and Market street, San Francisco, was born in San Francisco,
California, in 1855, and has been engaged in the practice of medicine since
1875. His early education was received in the public schools of his
native place, graduating at the high school in 1873. He then entered the
medical department of the University of the Pacific, now the Cooper Medical
College, where he graduated in 1875, receiving the degree of Doctor of
Medicine. Dr. Nightingale then went to Europe, and entered the University
of Berlin, Prussia, graduating in 1877, and receiving a diploma as Doctor of
Medicine. He remained one year in Venice, attending the hospital clinics,
and in the same work for two years in Paris and London. He then returned
to California, and has devoted himself to general practice since that
time. For ten years he had his office at the corner of Market and
Stockton streets; he has just built the large brick building at the corner of
Van Ness avenue and Market street, which is six stories high.
Dr. Nightingale's father, John Nightingale, is one of the pioneers of 1849, and
has been one of the well-known business and real-estate men in San
Francisco for the past forty years. The family are of English descent,
and settled in New Jersey, where the Doctor's grandfather and father were
born. His great-grandfather came to America in the early history of the
United States. They owned cotton mills in the early history of the
development of that manufacture in this country.
