JOSEPH
A. MOORE, JR.
Joseph
A. Moore, Jr., president of Moore Dry Dock Company, was born in San Francisco,
California, on January 12, 1908.
After attending the grade and high
schools in San Francisco, he entered the University of California from which he
graduated in 1929 with the Bachelor of Science degree. He then attended
Stanford University from which he received the Master of Business
Administration degree in 1931.
Following graduation from Stanford
University, Mr. Moore started to work for the Moore Dry Dock Company in the
machine shop and in 1940 became president of the company.
During World War II the Moore Dry
Dock Company employed up to 38,000 men and women; constructed 110 vessels of
some nine different types with a total value of approximately $450,000,000;
also repaired some 3,000 vessels.
Mr. Moore served as president of the
Propeller Club of the United States, Port of San Francisco, in 1945. He is
director of Crocker First National Bank of San Francisco, Pabco
Products, Inc., and Martine Exchange, Inc., all of San Francisco; also director
of the California Insurance Company and the National Association of
Manufacturers; trustee of Mills College, Oakland, California.
He holds membership in the American
Bureau of Shipping; American Committee, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping; Society
of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; Bohemian Club and the Pacific-Union
Club, both of San Francisco.
