JOHN HENRY MILLER.

 

 

In the difficult and highly technical field of patent law John H. Miller, of San Francisco is a recognized authority. He has specialized in this branch of practice for more than 40 years, and has handled many important cases.

 

Mr. Miller is a native of Virginia, born in 1854 at Lynchburg, the son of William A. Miller and Margaret (Henry) Miller. His father was the son of Samuel T. Miller, a noted classical instructor in Virginia, and he in turn was the son of Thomas Miller, a soldier of the Revolution and Captain of volunteers under General Greene in the Carolinas at the battles of Eutaw Springs, Guilford and Cowpens. His mother, Margaret Henry, was the daughter of John Henry of Charlotte County, Va., who was the son of Patrick Henry, Revolutionary orator. On both sides he is the great grandson of two Revolutionary soldiers, and is eligible to membership in the Society of Cincinnati.

 

After completing his preparatory educational training in public schools Mr. Miller entered the University of Richmond, which conferred on him the degree of A. M. in 1874. In recognition of his legal achievements his Alma Mater conferred on him the degree of LL. D., in 1927. His legal training was obtained through private study in the office of Pringle & Hayne, of San Francisco and he was admitted to the California bar in 1879.

 

For 25 years Mr. Miller practiced law at San Francisco, and then moved to New York City and organized the firm of Miller & Merwin. Three years later he returned to San Francisco, where he since practiced alone. He is Patent Counsel for such interests as the Southern Pacific Co., American Chain Co., Cary Manufacturing Co., Holt Manufacturing Co., Levi Strauss & Co., Byron Jackson Iron Works, Santa Cruz Portland Cement Co., Petroleum Rectifying Co., Sun Maid Raisin Growers Association, George Campbell Carson, Carson Investment Co., and others.

 

During his 40 years of practice Mr. Miller has successfully handled numerous important cases in the various courts, among them being State of California vs. Central Pacific, Worden vs. Fig Syrup Co., Keyes vs. Eureka, Southern Development Co. vs. Silva, Singer vs. Cramer, Bowers vs. Von Schmitt, Smith vs. Vulcan Iron Works, Graff vs. Boesch, all in the United States Supreme Court, and many others.

 

Mr. Miller is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of California, the Bar Association of San Francisco, American Society of International Law, Patent Law Association of Washington, Mechanic's Institute of San Francisco and the National Geographical Society. He is a Mason and a member of the Pacific Union Club, Commonwealth Club, Union League Club and Bohemian Club of San Francisco, also the Virginias' Club and Southern Club of New York City. In 1906 he married Susie Jones, daughter of Captain William A. Jones of Memphis, Tenn.
