JULIAN J.
MEYER
Julian J. Meyer, well known financier of San Francisco, is of the third generation of his family to be closely identified with the business affairs of this city and the development of the municipality. He was born in San Francisco, October 11, 1889, a son of Henry and Selda (Falck) Meyer. The genealogical history of the Meyer family extends back to about 1740, when those of the name lived in Bohemia. Two decades later, in 1760, the family moved to Furth, Bavaria, Germany, where Jonas Meyer, the grandfather of Julian J., was born July 11, 1827. He married Julia Newhouse, also a native of Furth, and later they emigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco, California, where Jonas Meyer conducted a tobacco business. His son, Henry Meyer, was born in San Francisco, April 4, 1855, and was here reared and educated. During his career he won prominence in banking and was universally regarded as a man of the strictest integrity and unusual business acumen. He was associated with his uncle, Daniel Meyer, in the conduct of the institution known as the Bank of Daniel Meyer. Henry Meyer manifested an active and helpful interest in all civic movements which he considered of worth, and fraternally he was affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. His death occurred September 24, 1916, when he had attained the age of sixty-one years. His widow, who still resides in San Francisco, is a daughter of one of the old German families of the Empire state. Abraham Falck was born in 1814, and his wife in 1832. Their daughter Selda was united in marriage to Henry Meyer in Buffalo, New York, on the 10th of October, 1877, and is the mother of three children, namely: Edna, who is the wife of Ernest J. Sultan of San Francisco; Julian J., the immediate subject of this review; and Alfred F., who received the degree of Bachelor of Laws from Stanford University in 1915 but is not active in law practice.
Julian J. Meyer attended the public schools of San Francisco until seventeen years of age and then became associated with the family bank, continuing his identification therewith until 1913. During the past eighteen years he has devoted his attention to the supervision of his private financial affairs. He is the secretary of the Henry Meyer Estate Company and a director of Urban Properties, Incorporated.
On the 7th of December, 1911, in San Francisco, Mr. Meyer was married to Miss Adele E. Hirsch, a daughter of the late Charles and Jennie (Schoenfield) Hirsch. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer have two children: Julian John, born September 25, 1912; and Jean Selda, born January 1, 1923.
Mr. Meyer is one of the founders of the Pacific Opera and a trustee of the San Francisco Boys’ Club. His name is on the membership rolls of the Argonaut Club, the Concordia Club, the Beresford Club, the Menlo Circus Club, the Commonwealth Club and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. His religious affiliation is with the Congregational Emanu-El. During the period of the World war Mr. Meyer served as a member of the war industries board. He maintains a well appointed suite of offices on the thirteenth floor of the Russ building at 235 Montgomery street, San Francisco.
