JOSEPH J. McSHANE

The success attained by Joseph J. McShane in the practice of law in San Francisco is the realization of a boyhood ambition, and is the direct result of persistent effort, thorough training and natural ability in the lines of his vocation. He was born in this city December 2, 1890, and is a son of the late Bernard J. McShane and his wife, Mary (McCreesh) McShane.

Bernard J. McShane was born in Ireland, and came to the United States in the early ‘70s. He was a mechanical engineer by profession, and lived a very honorable and straightforward life. His death occurred August 12, 1914. Mrs. Mary (McCreesh) McShane, who was born in County Armagh, Ulster province, Ireland, also came to the United States in the early ‘70s, was married in San Francisco, and still resides in this city. By her marriage she was the mother of three sons and one daughter, namely: Joseph J., of this review; Virginia M.; Henry T.; and Raymond J.

Joseph J. McShane attended the public and the parochial schools of his native city, then took his advanced studies in St. Ignatius College and the University of California, having received the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence from the latter institution in 1918. From boyhood, through his school years, he always knew how to work. He sold newspapers on the street, had a newspaper route, and ran errands in order to make money. For six years prior to his graduation from the university, he was employed in the San Francisco county district attorney’s office, with the result that he acquired much practical experience and first-hand knowledge of the profession he had chosen for his life’s work. He has acquired a large clientage since beginning general practice, and is recognized as an ethical and astute attorney. His offices are in suite 418-19 Flood building, at 870 Market street in San Francisco.

In San Francisco, on the 21st of June, 1921, Mr. McShane was married to Miss Theresa Felvey, who was born in this city. They have two children: Joseph James, Jr., born March 15, 1925; and Gertrude L., born August 15, 1927. The McShane home is at 80 Forest Side.

During the World war period, Mr. McShane served as a member of the local legal advisory board, as a Four-Minute speaker, and was active in various drives and the Liberty Loan campaigns. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Native Sons of the Golden West, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Ancient Order of Foresters, and the Elks Club. He is a devout communicant of St. Anne’s parish of the Roman Catholic Church, and belongs to the Young Men’s Institute. He is a democrat in his political belief, and he has invariably contributed his cooperation in civic affairs whenever he deemed it his duty to lend his aid.
