GARRET WILLIAM McENERNEY.

 

 

A man of brilliant legal attainments and unquestioned integrity, Garret W. McEnerney, of San Francisco, has amply earned his present standing as one of the leaders of the California bar. He is a native of California and was born in 1865 at Napa. After attending both public and private schools of his native city he studied for two years at Sacramento Institute, then entered St. Mary's College of San Francisco, from which he graduated with the B. S. degree in 1881. In recognition of his achievements in the field of jurisprudence the Catholic University of America conferred on him the degree of D. C. L. in 1915.

 

Mr. McEnerney was admitted to the California bar in 1886. Locating in San Francisco he became a member of the firm of Spencer & McEnerney in 1889.  In 1892 and 1893 he was a member of the firm of Maxwell & McEnerney, and from the latter date to 1895 the firm of Stanley, Hayes, McEnerney & Bradley. He has since practiced individually.

 

From 1896 to 1899 Mr. McEnerney served as Attorney for the California State and San Francisco boards of health. In 1902 he was Counsel for the United States at The Hague in the arbitration with Mexico over the Pius Fund of the Californias. After the San Francisco fire of 1906 he took the lead in having the McEnerney Act passed by the Legislature, permitting owners of real property to restore the records of title which were destroyed, and defended its validity in court. He is now General Counsel for the Pacific Gas & Electric Company.

 

Mr. McEnerney holds membership in the American Bar Association, State Bar of California and the Bar Association of San Francisco, as well as the Pacific Union Club, University Club, Olympic Club, Bohemian Club and various other organizations. Since 1901 he has served as a Regent of the University of California.
