IVAN
NICHOLAS MAROEVICH
Ivan Nicholas Maroevich, engaged in the general practice of law in San Francisco, his native city, was born April 24, 1897, a son of Rocque, a Dalmatian, who crossed the Atlantic in the early ‘90s. The father came direct to San Francisco and here established business as a restaurateur, remaining a resident of the city until his demise in 1903 at the age of forty-two years. In San Francisco he had married Miss Cora Buja, whose life has been spent in this city. Her parents were Nicholas and Mary (Plancich) Buja. The father, a native of Dalmatia, came to San Francisco in 1850 by way of Cape Horn and engaged in placer mining for a number of years. Later he opened a restaurant opposite the old ferry, on Montgomery street, and in that building his daughter Cora was born. He was one of the volunteer firemen of San Francisco and experienced the various phases of pioneer life in this part of the country. Mr. and Mrs. Maroevich were the parents of two sons, Ivan Nicholas and Nicholas.
After attending private schools of San Francisco, Ivan N. Maroevich enrolled as a student in St. Ignatius College, now known as the University of San Francisco, from which he received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1918 and that of Bachelor of Laws in 1920. Since his admission to the bar he has followed his profession in this city and is conducting a large general practice. He is well versed in statute and precedent and never neglects that thorough preparation which is so essential to success in legal work.
On the 12th of June, 1923, Mr. Maroevich was married in San Francisco to Miss Florence Margaret Mountford, a native of the city and a daughter of George and Margaret (Lane) Mountford. Mr. and Mrs. Maroevich now have two children: Margaret Mary, who was born in San Francisco on the 8th of September, 1924: and Ivan N., Jr., born February 5, 1927. The parents are communicants of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church and Mrs. Moroevich is active in its work and also in the affairs of the Catholic Daughters of America. When national issues are involved Mr. Moroevich votes with the democratic party but at local elections he maintains an independent attitude, casting his ballot for the candidate whom he considers best qualified for office. In the activities of the Knights of Columbus he takes a prominent part, being a past grand knight of the San Francisco Council and state advocate of the California jurisdiction. He also belongs to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and to the San Francisco and California Bar Associations. He likewise has membership in the Slavonic Mutual & Benevolent Society, which will celebrate its diamond jubilee in 1932. His grandfather was a charter member of this organization, and his father served as secretary thereof for more than a decade prior to his death. Mr. Maroevich resides at 2439 Funston street and his office is in the Humboldt Bank building at 785 Market street. With industry and determination as his salient characteristics, he has steadily progressed in his profession, faithfully fulfilling the trusts reposed in him and demonstrating his ability to cope with the intricacies of the law.
