EDWARD C. LIPMAN

 

 

Edward C. Lipman, president of The Emporium Capwell Company, was born January 25, 1893, in Berkeley, California; son of Frederick Lockwood and Edith (Law) Lipman.

            He graduated from the University of California in 1914 with the B.S. degree; Phi Kappa Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma fraternities.

            Mr. Lipman joined The Emporium, department store in San Francisco, California, in 1914; assistant superintendent from 1915 to 1917; general superintendent from 1919 to 1920; divisional merchandise manager from 1920 to 1923; assistant general merchandise manager from 1924 to 1927; general manager for The H. C. Capwell Company, Oakland, California, from 1927 to 1937; vice president and managing director of The Emporium from 1937 to 1947. Since 1947 he has been president and director of The Emporium Capwell Company, San Francisco. From 1918 to 1919 he served with the United States Naval Reserve Force.

            Director of American Retail Federation; San Francisco Better Business Bureau; San Francisco Retail Dry Goods Association; San Francisco Shopping News; San Francisco Retailers’ Council; San Francisco Federated Fund; Wells Fargo Bank & Union Trust Company; and Caterpillar Tractor Company.

            Mr. Lipman is consulting professor at School of Business Administration, Stanford University; Advisory Council for School of Business Administration (University of California), Executive Development Program (Stanford University), and San Francisco State College; vice president of California Retailers’ Association; member of American Arbitration Association, and Retailers’ Credit Association.

            Member of The Pacific-Union Club, Bohemian Club, San Francisco Gold Club (San Francisco); and Claremont Country Club (Oakland California).

            On June 12, 1920, Mr. Lipman married Julia Heaton Austin and they have two daughters, Kathryn Cossley (Mrs. George Chapin) and Margaret Edith (Mrs. John Pillsbury).
