ARTHUR H. KENT

 

 

Arthur H. Kent, lawyer, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on March 19, 1894; the son of Sidney John and Alice Margaret (Taylor) Kent.

            He received his A.B. magna cum laude in 1917 from the University of Southern California, and the J.D. degree from Leland Stanford University in 1925.

            Mr. Kent was admitted to the California bar on November 1, 1938, and is in practice at San Francisco as senior partner of the firm of Kent and Brookes.

            Served as assistant professor of law at the University of Oregon, 1925 to 1926; associate professor of law at University of Cincinnati, 1926-1927; professor of law, secretary of Law School, and Dean of Pre-Professional Students, University of Chicago, 1927 to 1935; visiting professor of law at various times at University of Michigan, Columbia University, Stanford University, University of California, West Virginia University, University of Washington and University of North Carolina.

            Mr. Kent served as assistant chief counsel and acting chief counsel for the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Washington, D.C., from 1934 to 1936, and as assistant general counsel for United States Treasury Department from 1936 to 1938, acting as Tax Legislative Counsel. He served for many years as a member of the Committee on Federal Income Tax, Section of Taxation, American Bar Association, and other committees of that section, and since 1949 has been a member of the Council of the Section of Taxation. He is also a member of the Advisory Committee on Tax Procedure for the United States Treasury Department. Mr. Kent has written extensively for law reviews and other publications, principally in the field of the Law of Taxation.

            Member of the American Bar Association, American Judicature Society, California Historical Society, the State Bar of California, San Francisco Bar Association; Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa Associates, Order of the Coif, Phi Delta Phi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon; member of the United States Supreme Court Bar; belongs to the Bohemian Club of San Francisco.

            On August 22, 1919, Mr. Kent married Estrelle Mae Cook, and they have one daughter, Margaret Lillian. The family residence is in San Mateo, California.
