ARTHUR SIDNEY JONES

Favorably known among the business men of San Francisco is Arthur Sidney Jones, vice president and manager of the Associated Pipe Line Company at 79 Montgomery street. He is a native of Swansea, Wales, where his birth occurred June 3, 1878. His father, Jonah Jones, a mining engineer, remained in Swansea all of his life, his death having occurred in 1881, when he was forty-nine years old. The mother of the subject of this review, Jane Esther (Saunders) Jones, came to San Francisco from Wales in 1890, and here lived until her death in 1891, when she was fifty years of age.

Arthur Sidney Jones, the youngest of a family of five children, was a youth of twelve years when he accompanied his mother on her emigration to the United States in 1890. He acquired his education at the Lick Wilmerding high school of San Francisco and through the medium of the Alexander Institute courses. When he was nineteen years of age, he began to earn his own livelihood as an apprentice in the machinist trade, and his first employment was with the Fulton Iron Works in San Francisco. He followed this trade for three years, after which he became manager of the American Crude Oil Burner Company, a California corporation. In June, 1908, he entered the employ of the Associated Pipe Line Company as an engineer. In 1910, he was promoted to the position of division superintendent, in which capacity he remained until 1915, at which time he was appointed general superintendent. In 1923, he was named as general manager and vice president of the company, which is his present incumbency. He is also a director in the concern. Mr. Jones has carved out his own success in the business and industrial world, and is known as a thorough, honest, and competent executive. He became an American citizen in San Francisco in July, 1901.

In San Francisco, May 6, 1905, Mr. Jones was married to Miss Margaret Fisher, of Jackson, Amador county, California, a daughter of the late David Fisher and his wife, Jean (Morgan) Fisher. Her father was a native of Fifeshire, Scotland. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have become the parents of three children, as follows: Jean Fisher, who was born in Berkeley, California, February 7, 1908; Margaret Vaughan, who was born in Fresno, California, November 5, 1912, and Arthur Sidney, Jr., born in Fresno, California, September 12, 1915. The family residence is situated at 3147 Claremont avenue in Berkeley.

Mr. Jones has always given his support to the republican party. He is a member of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church of Berkeley, and is also ex-vestryman. He belongs to Excelsior Lodge, No. 166, F. & A. M., in San Francisco; to the Commonwealth Club; and to the Sigma Gamma Epsilon honorary professional fraternity. He has taken a real interest in the civic affairs of San Francisco, where his business is carried on, and also in the community activities of Berkeley, where he resides. He has found his favorite departures from his busy career in playing tennis, in hiking across country, and in fishing.
