ARTHUR E.
HOLL
Arthur E. Holl, member of an old San Francisco family, is the executive head of the Holl Shoe Company at 3020 Mission street, which has been in his family for a period closely approaching a half century. He was born in San Francisco, June 29, 1893, and is a son of George and the late Rosalia (Lustenberger) Holl. The father was born October 9, 1858, in Alsace-Lorraine, and there was reared and educated. He emigrated to the United States, came directly to San Francisco and was here engaged in his trade of shoemaker, doing custom work. He followed this vocation for the remainder of his active career, and in 1884 established a small cobbling shop which was the forerunner of the business now known as the Holl Shoe Company. He was successful, and is now enjoying the fruits of his labors in retirement. He is a democrat in politics, and is a devout communicant of the Roman Catholic Church. His wife, whose death occurred August 16, 1927, was born in San Francisco, on the site of the present Merchants’ Exchange, and was a daughter of John and Elizabeth Lustenberger, who were natives of Alsace-Lorraine and came to San Francisco by way of Cape Horn in pioneer days. Mrs. Holl was one of the first students in the old Mission Dolores school; she completed her education in this city, and was here married to Mr. Holl. They became the parents of six sons, namely: George E.; Albert F.; Edmund J.; Arthur E.; Francis J.; and Dr. Walter E. Five of the sons served their country during the United States’ participation in the World war.
Arthur E. Holl attended parochial school in his youth and continued his studies in St. Ignatius College. After completing his schooling, he became associated with his father in business and since the latter’s retirement has successfully carried forward the interests of the Holl Shoe Company. This business has been developed until it is one of the largest of its kind in San Francisco. Mr. Holl has standing of distinction among business men, and is now in his fourth year as president of the Mission Street Merchants’ Association.
On February 20, 1920, in San Francisco, Mr. Holl was married to Mary Evelyn Murphy, who was born in this city, and is a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Carroll, both of whom were representatives of respected pioneer families of the bay district. Mr. and Mrs. Holl have one son, Arthur E., Jr., who was born July 1, 1925. The family residence is situated at 194 Onondaga avenue.
The political allegiance of Mr. Holl is given to the democratic party, and he is a communicant of the Corpus Christi parish of the Roman Catholic Church. He is a member, and past grand knight, of the Knights of Columbus, and belongs to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
