JOHN S.
HODGHEAD
John S. Hodghead, a young member of the San Francisco bar, now engaged in general civil practice at 369 Pine street, was born in Laytonville, California, June 30, 1902, and is a son of John S. and Nellie (Gray) Hodghead. The father was born in 1862, in Rockbridge county, Virginia, descendants of an old English family of that state, and son of Alexander Hodghead, a Presbyterian minister and author of several religious works. John S. Hodghead, Sr., began his education in Virginia and became a physician after completing his professional studies at the Cooper Medical College and the St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons. He came to California when a youth of eighteen years and first settled in Ukiah, together with his three brothers, David A., Beverly L., and Horace. David A., and Horace Hodghead took up the practice of medicine and dentistry respectively, while Beverly L., practiced law in San Francisco until his death in 1928, having been president of the San Francisco Bar Association and of the Commonwealth Club of California during his career. John S. Hodghead, Sr., is now in charge of the medical work at the Indian reservation of Round Valley, California. Nellie (Gray) Hodghead, his wife, was born in Washington county, Virginia, of Scotch-Irish descent, and represents a pioneer family of the Old Dominion. She was married in Virginia and came to California in 1890. One of her three children died in infancy, the others being: Helen Marr, at present a teacher in the high school in Burlingame, California; and John S., Jr.
In the acquirement of an education John S. Hodghead attended the public schools of Covelo, California, completing the high school course by graduation with the class of 1919. His more advanced intellectual training was received as a student at the University of California in Berkeley, which institution conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1923. With the ambition to become an attorney, he then took up his professional studies at the Hastings Law School, from which he received the Bachelor of Laws degree in 1927. He was duly admitted to the California state bar and has since been engaged in law practice in the city of San Francisco. He is a member of the San Francisco and the California State Bar Associations, the Barrister’s Club and the Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity.
Mr. Hodghead is a supporter of the democratic party in political affairs, and he worships in the Presbyterian Church. His name is on the membership roll of the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco.
