HARRY
WILLIAM HIND
Harry
William Hind, pharmacist, was born June 2, 1915, in Berkeley, California. The son of Harry W. and B. J. (O’Connor) Hind.
He received his education at the
University of California and graduated from the College of Pharmacy with a B.S.
degree in 1939. On December 12, 1940 he married Diana Vernon Miesse and they have one daughter, Leslie Vernon, and one
son, Gregory William. Their home is at 2638 – 40th Avenue, San
Francisco, California.
In 1948 he was the recipient of the
Ebert prize for outstanding contribution in pharmaceutical research. The award
was presented to him by the American Pharmaceutical Association.
Mr. Hind is the author of numerous
scientific papers and articles: “Simplified Vacuum Tube Electrometer” (1940);
“History and Development of Contact Lens Solutions” (1944); “A New Concept of
the Role of Hydrogen Ion Concentration and Buffer Systems in the Preparation of
Ophthalmic Solutions” (1947); “Contact lens Solutions and the Fogging Phenomenon”
(1947); “The Hydrogen Ion Concentration and Osmotic Properties of Lachrymal
Fluid” (1949); “Contact lens Solutions” (1950); “A Slide Rue for Isotonic
Calculations” (1951).
Mr. Hind is a member of the American
Pharmaceutical Association and served as president of the California Branch in
1945 and 1950. His associations include membership in the American Chemical
Society, The New York Academy of Sciences, The Association of Vitamin Chemists,
The Armed Forces Chemical Association, The Society of the Sigma Xi and Phi
Delta Chi Fraternity.
As a business man Mr. Hind is
responsible for founding Barnes-Hind Pharmacy and Barnes-Hind Laboratories in
1940. These companies have achieved a prominent place on the West Coast and
gained a national and international reputation for scientific accomplishments
in pharmaceutical research. A subsidiary company, Barnes-Hind International, is
distributing their products throughout the world. The companies’ headquarters
are at 430 Post Street, San Francisco, California.
