WILLIAM
RANDOLPH HEARST
William
Randolph Hearst, newspaper publisher and editor, was born in San Francisco,
California, on April 29, 1863; son of George (United States Senator) and Phoebe
(Apperson). He died in 1951.
He received his preparatory
education at Harvard University, 1882 to 1885; received an honorary LL.D.
degree from Oglethorpe in 1927.
Mr. Hearst was the editor and
proprietor of the following newspapers: San Francisco Examiner, Los Angeles
Examiner, Los Angeles Herald and Express, Chicago Herald-American, Boston
American, Boston Sunday Advertiser, Boston Record, New York Journal-American,
New York Mirror, Albany Times Union, Baltimore Sunday American, Baltimore
News-Post, Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph, Detroit Times, Seattle Post-Intelligencer,
San Francisco Call-Bulletin, Oakland Post-Enquirer, San Antonio Light,
Milwaukee Sentinel; editor and
proprietor of the following magazines: Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping,
Harper’s and Junior Bazaars, Motor, Motor Boating, American Druggest,
Town and Country, House Beautiful; editor and proprietor of Good Housekeeping
(London, England); Connoisseur incorporated with International Studio, Harper’s
Bazaar incorporated with Vanity Fair.
Mr. Hearst was elected to the 58th
and 59th Congresses
(1903-07), 11th New York District. Democrat. He was a
candidate for mayor of New York, on municipal ownership ticket, in 1905; on
Independent League ticket in 1909; for governor of New York in 1906, on
Independent League and Democratic tickets. He was married to Millicent Willson on April 28, 1903.
