GEORGE HENRY
HAUERKEN
As esteemed German citizen of San Francisco was the late George Henry Hauerken, prominent wholesale wine and liquor merchant, whose death closed a long and honorable career extending from pioneer days. He was born in Elsfleth, in the province of Oldenburg, Germany, December 14, 1854. In 1866, when he was only twelve years of age, he came to San Francisco, and here acquired the major portion of his education. His first employment here was in the grocery business, but he did not remain long therein. He was afterward associated with the firm of Lackman & Jacoby for a time, and then established himself in the business which he continued during the remainder of his life. His store and office were situated for many years at one location, at the corner of Brannan and Third streets. He was numbered among the most substantial and honored representatives of his particular business of wholesale wine and liquor dealing. He was considered as one of the finest type of German citizen, progressive and warmly interested in the welfare of the city.
Mr. Hauerken was married in San Francisco, in 1887, to Miss Marie Rohde, also a native of Germany, who came to San Francisco with her parents when she was a small child. To their marriage there were five children born.
Mr. Hauerken was extraordinarily prominent in the activities of the various Teutonic societies in San Francisco, especially in the old Germania Club and the Knights of the Royal Arch. He loved to associate with his friends and acquaintances, and his presence was equally desirable among those who knew him. Mr. Hauerken’s death on the 15th of October, 1910, was a distinct and irreparable loss to the German citizenship of San Francisco. His memory and prestige remain, however, and are a source of pride to those who bear his name.
